Alternative Carrers for Nurses?

Hello. I am very much interested in her courses as well. It seems very expensive to attend her seminars. Curious as to what job options I could obtain.

I am researching this as well. Try doing a google search for nurse entrepreneur or along those lines. I have found lots of information without spending any money. In California, I have just confirmed with our BON that an R.N. has every right to have a private practice, as a licensed professional can work independently. Of course, there is no safety net of bennies and such. My mind has been wandering, wanting to research how doctors form their "groups", thinking of creating a "Nursing Group" - not an agency. Then if I had independent home care clients I could swap weekend/vacation coverage with other independent nurses -- radical, huh?

I also called N.S.O. (Liability Insurance) and they confirmed that as long as I work within my scope of practice, I am covered. It does not matter if I am self-employed or not.

Another idea I am going to try, on the side, is offering massage for relaxation and pain relief. Maybe smoking cessation, diabetes management, and other client education services. Since those are considered independent nursing duties, at least here in CA, the BON told me I can "treat" my clients without needing any doctor's orders.

Fun to think about options...

These threads are interesting...many nurse I know have gone into esthetics. Some have switched and became instructors (nsg) and local teachers (primary) and (secondary).

In USA, I have noticed many magazine articles re: legal nurse consultants. I have never heard of them before. It sounds very interesting. Do any of you pract. or know of anyone who is a legal nurse consultant.

I know an RN who became a legal nurse consultant without having to get any additional education. I worked at a hospital w/ her when an opportunity came up and she made the switch. She has consulted w/ me on a couple of cases. PM me if you want more details.

Just on the question of going to Donna's class.... I did and i loved it. There are so many differnet things that we can do that are different. There are even jobs working on a tv show. Iam not sure what the tapes are like, but if they are like the lecture it will be great.

I live in Va, the class I went to was in NYC.... long day but worth every penny. She helped me see that I don't have to be a direct patient care nurse, I can make my own plan. Just have not figured it out yet.

Thanks everyone! I see I'm not the only one interested in this topic....great ideas!!!

I have been researching alternative careers for years now but my greatest barrier is fear (I have a great weekend plan and a HUGE pay cut would be reality no matter what I choose) and I can't seem to find any nurses who have taken the plunge.

After bedside nursing for 15 years, I'm aware of nurses' skill sets but how do you package and sell that? We all know that nurses never really had to do such a thing. Employers come to us! Did Donna Cardillo's seminars talk about that? Does anyone out there know of any good guides specific for nurses?
