Hello all,
I have looked all over this site in hopes of finding others that are getting their packets ready and are applying to the Air Force this fall. I have not found any recent threads on this.
I am applying for an ER spot. I have been a RN for 7 years and work in a Level II trauma emergency center. I have my MSN-Administrative Leadership and TCRN. Is there anyone out there that is also getting their packets ready for October boards? My recruiter told me that because of COVID everything has been pushed back and that boards will meet in October this year. He also told me that I would be going to MEPS and doing my medical in the next 3 weeks.

You quarantine the first few days with your roommate. Once your initial Covid results come back you can to do more with your flight but still very socially distance. You get to go to the flight room and march.
I quarantined for 2 week before OTS, didn't spend the holidays with family and quit my job 2 weeks beforehand.
Myself and at least 3 other members of my flight have it. 5 of us had symptoms and were rapid tested the rest of the flights results haven't come back.
I started having symptoms Sunday. 100.5 temp cough and sore throat. The on call medical IDMT was called in. My temp after waiting outside in the could was 99.5 (so she said it was normal) Her famous words to me were "not everything is Corona" But at least I can sleep at night that I reported like I was supposed to (I never get fevers when sick). Monday I was feeling worse I had GI symptoms, ear pain, headache and my cough turned from dry to like a had pneumonia cough, other people in my flight were admitting to symptoms such as body aches and the lost of taste and smell. We were rapid tested Tuesday and the entire flight is in quarantine.
I am not sure what happens. They either can't or don't know the answers. Us 4 are the first ones they have had that have been symptomatic. I am keeping up with the academics but worry about taking the PT right after getting off isolation. Covid is sucked all my energy. We had to evacuate yesterday due to a fire alarm and 5 flights of stair wore me out.
Before that OTS was going well. You don't get a lot of sleep and they push you. But I was learning and doing well. I have no desire to to this all again and worry about my base changing as I have already made plans.
Biggest frustration is I had a family member express mail me vitamins (zinc etc) we get mail M,W,F and it arrived Thursday but they didn't give us mail.
Apparently the other flights think we are living it up over here. When the truth is we still get up at 0430 even those with COVID. The building or at least my floor is 84 degrees. There are roaches and the food they send us has been interesting for sure and is usually late. All the cold leftovers no one else wanted.
Everyone on campus is tested again at the 2 week mark which was Tuesday. I am curious if anyone else will test positive because I am almost certain we all got it here. Results will probably come out Monday.
Sorry for the rant, its extremely frustrating. I just want to be healthy and finish.

Luckily I just have to get up and get on my computer to class things. We aren't required to do PT like those on quarantine without Corona. But I am young and I am sooo tired.

I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this and roaches, that’s gross. This definitely doesn’t sound like something to look forward to. I hope you feel better soon! Can we take vitamins with us? And how is the academics?

Coming from a prior service perspective, having a level of “embrace the suck” will go a long way. Few things about military life are something to look forward to and while we like to romanticize a lot of what we went through, often times pests and other discomforts are part of the gig. I remember when I had to go to Walter Reed regarding a medical issue at the same time the hospital was taking heat for their housing situation (early 2000s). I distinctly remember the media interviewing an army service member about how bad the conditions were and his flat response was “I’ve seen worse”. I vividly recall the palmetto bugs that inhabited some base barracks and dorms I lived in. Not to mention fire ants. Many of these bases are half a century or more old and often built in places few others would build. Not that it justifies such conditions, but it’s a typical plight of a soldier.
That being said, hoping conditions improve for those quarantined and you all can proceed on with minimal interruption. Sucks to have that intro to military life, but it will create a different level of appreciation and realistic expectation of both how the military deals with these things and what we can expect when things go pear shaped. It’s rarely ideal and likely will suck for all involved.

So I will have to figure out my new guy now
Hey @ttwilbs !! I might be the "other girl" from your region! haha! I am also ER/trauma and have had a couple different recruiters. Currently going to OTS 2/23 and Wright-Patt after! I'm eager to hear what you've heard so far, there are a lot of posts to scroll through haha.

I was fully prepared to embrace the suck. Just getting Corona threw me off guard. Ironically of the 5 people with covid (1 sick from another flight) 4/5 are nurses who worked with corona patients before coming here. One just got back from deployment overseas and went through major airports and none of us got Corona before coming here. We will get through this. The PT test might get interesting.
Yes bring vitamins bring OTC meds. You can keep in your security drawer. Or leave some in your civilian luggage. Not bringing more medicines has been the thing I wish I brought the most. Bring everything you think you could possibly need.
A bit off topic, but pertinent given the discussion. Anyone not there yet considering getting their covid vaccination? Our primary care clinic is JUST getting access to ours in Michigan. Considering getting it, but both I and the recruiter are unsure if it is encouraged or discouraged prior to shipping. Thoughts here?
I have had my first one, my second one is two days. I had moderna. Sore arm was only side effect. We are headed overseas, so I figured it would be required at some point. They sent out numbers at our hospital and about 55% of our staff took it. I think all the docs I work directly with did, as well as anesthesia.

Oh no! I’m in the Phantom flight and one of our flights is in quarantine for COVID. We had a member and their roommate go to quarantine the first week.
