Air Force nursing FY2021

Published

Hello all,

I have looked all over this site in hopes of finding others that are getting their packets ready and are applying to the Air Force this fall. I have not found any recent threads on this.

I am applying for an ER spot. I have been a RN for 7 years and work in a Level II trauma emergency center. I have my MSN-Administrative Leadership and TCRN. Is there anyone out there that is also getting their packets ready for October boards? My recruiter told me that because of COVID everything has been pushed back and that boards will meet in October this year. He also told me that I would be going to MEPS and doing my medical in the next 3 weeks.

You quarantine the first few days with your roommate. Once your initial Covid results come back you can to do more with your flight but still very socially distance. You get to go to the flight room and march.

I quarantined for 2 week before OTS, didn't spend the holidays with family and quit my job 2 weeks beforehand.

Myself and at least 3 other members of my flight have it. 5 of us had symptoms and were rapid tested the rest of the flights results haven't come back.

I started having symptoms Sunday. 100.5 temp cough and sore throat. The on call medical IDMT was called in. My temp after waiting outside in the could was 99.5 (so she said it was normal) Her famous words to me were "not everything is Corona" But at least I can sleep at night that I reported like I was supposed to (I never get fevers when sick). Monday I was feeling worse I had GI symptoms, ear pain, headache and my cough turned from dry to like a had pneumonia cough, other people in my flight were admitting to symptoms such as body aches and the lost of taste and smell. We were rapid tested Tuesday and the entire flight is in quarantine.

I am not sure what happens. They either can't or don't know the answers. Us 4 are the first ones they have had that have been symptomatic. I am keeping up with the academics but worry about taking the PT right after getting off isolation. Covid is sucked all my energy. We had to evacuate yesterday due to a fire alarm and 5 flights of stair wore me out.

Before that OTS was going well. You don't get a lot of sleep and they push you. But I was learning and doing well. I have no desire to to this all again and worry about my base changing as I have already made plans.

Biggest frustration is I had a family member express mail me vitamins (zinc etc) we get mail M,W,F and it arrived Thursday but they didn't give us mail.

Apparently the other flights think we are living it up over here. When the truth is we still get up at 0430 even those with COVID. The building or at least my floor is 84 degrees. There are roaches and the food they send us has been interesting for sure and is usually late. All the cold leftovers no one else wanted.

Everyone on campus is tested again at the 2 week mark which was Tuesday. I am curious if anyone else will test positive because I am almost certain we all got it here. Results will probably come out Monday.

Sorry for the rant, its extremely frustrating. I just want to be healthy and finish.

How is it going? Hope you all are feeling better!!

I'm curious how people are getting to OTS?  Considering driving, but unsure.  Recruiter hasn't said much about the logistics of getting there.

The last email they sent said to drive. Seemed to discourage flying if possible. I think I’m going to rent a car and drive and drop it off nearby and Uber ??‍♀️

Well, since I'm coming from and returning to California, I'll be flying LOL. The "required" amount of travel days from here to there is 7 meaning according to the military and their required rules for how many miles/hours you can drive in a day, it should take 7 days and they can be super strict on that if you were to have an accident or something and be further than you should have been for the time you've been on the road. I don't feel like 7 days in and out of gas stations, hotels, and eateries could be any less risky than just taking a 4ish hour flight. ??‍♀️

As for logistics, my recruiter told me you choose whether you want to fly or drive. They adjust your orders to accommodate that (as in, your initial day on orders is your first allowed travel day so if you are allowed 7 travel days, your date of active duty service begins 7 days before the class start date; if you choose to fly, you get one travel day and your orders start the day you fly out-1 day before class starts).

Your orders are supposed to have a number on the back to call and arrange transport if you plan to fly. That being said, it's also the "TMO" at Maxwell that handles it so my recruiter suggested I call them to start making arrangements. They generally require your orders, however, at this point, I could not get orders until just a few days before I leave. So they emailed me a form to fill out that I can either go ahead and send in for them to start working on booking me a flight and then just send my orders when I get them, or I can just wait and send the form with the orders and they'll do it all then. They said if I choose to send the form without orders and don't send them orders by 3 days prior to the class start date, they will cancel my ticket.

Here's a good link for travel info so you can see how many days they will require you take to get to Maxwell or from Maxwell to your first duty station.

I will be be driving. I don’t want to pack all my luggage on a plane. I also read that if we are to get off base privileges at some point it’s nice to have a vehicle. Not sure that’ll happen with Covid.
I will probably get there a day or so I won’t feel rushed getting there.

Recruiter got me a better number than just the TMO number and the lady had my plane ticket booked within just a few minutes! Now she's sending me an itinerary with an email address to send my orders to whenever they decide to show up LOL.

Has anyone started a facebook group for the April 6th OTS cohort?

I did my interviews 3 weeks ago and was wondering if anyone has heard when the results of this month's selection board might come out?

@kfddakota I spoke with my recruiter a few weeks ago and he said results would be within 30-45 days after the board meets!

I just got pushed back to this class. I don’t know if it’s because I am part of the other class, but this will not pull up for me. Weird!
