Ages of male nursing students?

Published

Of the 23 other students comprising the group that I entered nursing school with, three of them are men. The class that is graduating at the end of next week I believe has 1 male student, and as far as I know the class immediately behind mine has 1 as well. This is about 60 students (some classes have had students drop), with 6 of them being males; that's only 1 in 10.

So we know that male nurses are few and far between, but how old are we?

The 1 student in the class graduating next week is 28.

The 1 student in the class that entered the semester after mine is at least 30 (a second career-er I believe).

Of the 4 in my class, 2 are about 45, 1 is 40, and then there is me...21.

How old are you guys? How old when you started school?

Just curious.

I'm 19 and i'm currently in a adn program i'll be just barely be 21 when i graduate. Im the youngest in my class, and i'm one of 5 males. Do you guys think me being such a young age would affect me negatively when i'm on the job hunt.

I can't answer that question Kenny but I hope not, because I will be around your age (well, I will 20 my birthday is in October) when I graduate from my ADN program. I got hired at the hospital where I work now the day I turned 18, before then I wasn't old enough to work there. They were eager to hire me as a CNA right out of high school. Being young can be kind of a hinderence sometimes, because I graduated at 17 I had to wait from June til October before I could even work as a CNA. Maybe if you get in a place now as a CNA, they might hire you after you get your RN License and maybe you will have an easier time getting a job after you pass the NCLEX, becuase they will already know what type of worker you are.

I hope it all works out for you. All of the schools I'm applying to around where I live say I'm the youngest applicant as well.

There are about 6 men in my classes. Ranging from early 20's to early 30's. :)

LVN - 22yrs old.

Had two other males in my graduating class - both over 30.

I'm 21 just graduated with a bachelor's in psychology. Getting 2nd bachelor's in nursing. Only guy in the class

Specializes in Emergency Room MA.

23 started in the fall 2010

Specializes in Hospice and palliative care.

I'm the oldest student in my class of 35 and I was 55 (chronologically) when we started.

I am 25, second career (Accelerated BSN)...there are about 15-20 men at my level tho I am the only male in the "fast track". I think its great to not have so many other men in the program because every prof knows who you are and you do not blend in with the sea of female students.

Specializes in International.

I'm 22 and start my ASN Program this week! I kinda wish I started 2-3 years ago, but I am still young. When I graduate I want to join Doctors Without Borders for a year, and then transfer to UGA to finish my Bachelors in Russian Studies:)

Specializes in ED.

Started at 47, graduated at 48 (last Aug) started working at 49 (last Nov)

If accepted, Nursing school starts June 1st, I will turn 41 end of June.

I'm 57 and will be retiring from the Fire Service as a Firefighter/Paramedic for 32 years. I'll be 58 when I retire and complete Nursing school and have already been accepted by a local hospital. No age is ever too old to stop learning or give up a dream.
