Of the 23 other students comprising the group that I entered nursing school with, three of them are men. The class that is graduating at the end of next week I believe has 1 male student, and as far as I know the class immediately behind mine has 1 as well. This is about 60 students (some classes have had students drop), with 6 of them being males; that's only 1 in 10.
So we know that male nurses are few and far between, but how old are we?
The 1 student in the class graduating next week is 28.
The 1 student in the class that entered the semester after mine is at least 30 (a second career-er I believe).
Of the 4 in my class, 2 are about 45, 1 is 40, and then there is me...21.
How old are you guys? How old when you started school?
Just curious.

Very interesting thread. Yes I know personally what has happened to Realtors recently. In my last quarter of Pre-Reqs, just turned 51, working as a security guard at night and going to school during the day. I don't remember when I have been happier. It's time in my life that I did something that can truly make a difference.
Hello Gentleman...
I am going to enter a LPN program here in NJ. I was told there are at least 3 other Males in a class of 28. I was also told I am the oldest student at age 48. I am very excited and being that I was married at the time my x went through her RN program (I should say we lol) I am somewhat prepared to make this happen. Once I complete the LPN program (11 months) and License obtained I look forward to a move from NJ to FLA or TX. Then LPN-RN-BSN.
BTW Does any one know If there are any posts in this web site I may communicate with other LPN'S or RN's M/F from Fla. or Tx. to discuss opportunities in those states?

I'm in my second term but i'm 35 a second career and there are three of us total one is 23 and the other 30 I believe. There were four of us originally in first term and he was early 20's but didn't make it past first term. My instructors say there are normally four to five males in each class.
Hey everyone! I'm 22 years old and I just got accepted into my community college's ADN program. I received my EMT-B license when I was 20, and decided to pursue nursing instead of becoming a firefighter/paramedic.
I saw my nursing class at orientation, and there is a huge amount of woman, but only like 10 guys. I think I'm going to be very nervous when class time comes and I'm one of the only guys in class...probably going to feel really self conscious.
In December I will be have my BSN. I am 22 years old. I'm the youngest in my class, and there are 5 other guys in my class. I'm also the only Black guy in the nursing program here, period (and damn proud to set an example). It's always funny too because I'm 6'3" 235lbs with an athletic build, and EVERYONE always asks me if I play sports. lol I don't think I'd have the time to be on a team and do nursing!
Valentine, First of all, congratulations on your accomplishment. I can relate to your achievement, since I graduate with my BSN back in my native country of Madrid, Spain at the tender age of 19yrs. Moreover, I was one of those that knew from the word go, exactly what path in life I was going to take. In addition, I was the only male in my class, and being into bodybuilding I was shall we say out of the norm in those days. Consequently, I was constantly asked by patients & staff, "why nursing with a body like that?" Lastly, even today after 35years in my beloved nursing career, I'm still being asked the same question which now makes me *grin* Wishing everyone in this forum the best in all of your future endeavors........Ciao~ :redbeathe

Unquestionably, it's great to hear that more men are getting into the nursing profession & that the ages do vary, I have always said that this beloved career of mine doesn't discriminate, if you can perform all the duties that are expected of you; one can work in nursing for as long as you desire.
