ADN Fall 2011 Hopefuls!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I wanted to start a thread for those of you who have or will apply to ADN programs for the Fall 2011 semester. I have started the process but I have completed my application yet. I am nervous and super stressed. Join this thread so we can vent together. Share our journeys into nursing school.

Well...I've been waiting on my NLN PAX score for three weeks, and found out yesterday that their computer equipment used to process the scores is broken. No one seems to know when it will be fixed. So....my school still doesn't have everyone's scores, so this will further delay the acceptance/denial letters from being sent out. UGH!!! We were originally told we'd get our letters mid-March, but now who knows...

And I don't even have my stupid score to know what my chances may be!!!:icon_roll

Well ladies i've decided to apply to the RN program AND a certified occupational therapy assistant program *cota*.

ive been doing a lot of research on it since last summer..and I was speaking to the director yesterday and application packets come out this month and she is sending me one. there is a great need for COTA's in my area.. (i made sure to look at job ads LOL) the pay is comparable to a RN..and in some cases a little more. The local school districts hire COTA's to work with autistic and developmentally challenged children..this would allow me to be at home with my own children during all major holidays, and summer, christmas, spring, and thanksgiving break.

or if i want to I can work in a skilled nursing facility (nursing home) which is where a lot of OT and COTA's work...and ive already found quite a few rehab companies that will pay for my school in return for 1-2yrs of employment.

sooo im going to apply to both and see what happens!!

yeah i guess.. but the problem is that i pretty much need a bs in something.. and the classes i can take for the bsn are only about 4.. but i must take it at the campus site.. its much easier to get a rn to bsn then to try and get a bsn.. so im thinking of maybe taking that psych developmental class and applying for the lottery.. ill be done with every pre req come fall.. but able to apply for the program come fall as well.. (ideally only need 3 more classes.) sociology, physiology and stats

Aw bummer... well in the mean time finish pre-reqs for a PA program in case you want to do it. Wouldn't hurt =)

unless anyone knows of schools that will take you if you are just waiting to get into the rn program.. but have most of the pre reqs and upperdivision classes done.. i wonder if thats possible..

Aw... well at my school (miami dade college in miami, fl) you only need health care experience, no BA. So CNAs, LPNs, RNs, phlebotomists, and other allied health people with their AA's are always applying... :| well goodluck, i am sure you will figure all this out!

Ok. I think I am stir crazy and have too much time on my hands to think but I am starting to get confused about what I want to do...

First off, I do want to become a nurse with all my heart but am not sure about which program to pursue first LPN or RN. I am a mother with a 2year old daughter who has been unemployed for almost 2 years. I have been surviving (barely) off of gifts, scholarships, unemployment benefits (which have stopped). What I am saying is I don't think I am financially stable to attend the RN program for two years with my daughter barely making it. But with the LPN its one year and I have a good chance of working when I graduate. What do you guys think? If you were in my shoes, what would you do? I know God will see me through anything I do. I just want to make the right decision for my situation.

Does the RN program allow you to take the NCLEX PN exam after the first year? Some of the more modernized programs have begun doing that to help retain students who might be going through rough financial problems I've been told.

Is there a reason why you haven't worked in two years? What about applying for financial aid and working as a CNA while you are in school for the RN?

Thank you for the suggest about the NCLEX PN, I will ask my program coordinator Monday. And no there is not a reason I have not worked in almost 3 years. I have applied to almost everywhere in my surrounding area and no luck :( I am still trying. Hopefully something will come up and I don't have to scarifice my dream any longer than necessary (unless I just flat out do not get in)

I second the idea of using your CNA license.

There is always a huge turnover rate for CNA's..i used to be one back in the day..so even if you dont see an ad posted just stop in at a LTC facility and see if they need help. LTC is always always looking for help..and most offer weekends only if you need them so family can watch your daughter and you forgo the expense of daycare.

If I were in your shoes..and working wasnt an option because you dont have family there and daycare is to expensive..then I would go with the LPN route..the LPN program that Im accepted to is only 10 months in length so you might not even have a year to go.

check with your local unemployment agency about the Work Inforcement Act..each state has a program. My sister in law is receiving this aid...they are paying for her school, and daycare and she still qualifies for pell grant because she 1. doesnt have a job any longer and 2. my brother's income meets their qualifications. You can look on this site about work inforcment..there is a couple of threads on it.

would you be able to get into a LPN program this fall or have to wait?

I promise I love this thread! You guys are so insightful. I know what program you are talking about! I applied for it and they are going to hold my application until (or if) I am accepted into the nursing program. I totally forgot about that. And I covered my tracks just in case I hit some type of problem and applied to both the LPN and RN programs so I am waiting on both of those letters. Thank you for keeping my head on straight. Everything is going so fast I am starting to have short-term memory lost. About to call the program coordinator about the WIA program and make sure that my application is still on hand. Thank You guys! (especially CNM2B201?)
