At my college, we are allowed one (1) missed clinical day. I have not missed a clinical day. This Wed. is our last clinical day and our final is on Thursday. So here is the dilemma....So far 8 out of 10 of us are considering skipping the last clinical day to study for the final. Make sense, right? But I am paranoid that the nursing director will find out and those who decide to skip could be reprimanded in some way. Has anyone dealt with this type of situation? What are your thoughts about skipping?
Do whatever you feel good about. If you feel any hesitation or apprehension about missing that day then chances are you better go!! You get so much out of clinical that you don't even realize...would be a shame to miss something that could happen that day that was very unexpected...my thought is Go to clinical, at least that would be my choice...:balloons:
I will be starting nursing school Aug 16th and I know nothing about clinicals, or if I can miss one or not. But when I read your thread it reminded me of a statistics class I had the first time I went to collage. The final was on Monday and the Friday before only 5 of us showed up for class. On the final exam, the proff gave a 20 point bonus question "What color tie was I wearing on Friday?" I guess what I'm saying is if you're given a chance to attend one more clinical you may just learn one more thing, and I hate for you to miss that one thing you may later see on the state exam. I know study time is important, but if I were you I'd go. Good luck in whatever you choose. By the way he was wearing a T-shirt.
Not having been in clinical yet, I'm not sure of my school's policy, but I can understand how bad it would look if so many of you called in sick on the last day. Maybe the nurses even have a little something planned for you???
JMO, but I wouldn't have the heart to do it, even if I did have the day. But on the flip side, I can TOTALLY understand the need for a study day!
I wouldn't do it. They allow you to miss a clinical day in case of situations that are beyond your control and will not appreciate you abusing that system. Re what a previous poster indicated... go ahead there's nothing they can do about it... this is probably completely true, however there's a possibility they're going to KNOW. And do you really want them to think poorly of you in any way at all? On the flip side, if you don't skip it, they're going to notice that you never missed one clinical as well... and that will affect their perceptions of you in a positive way. Attending clinicals are a responsibility.. so be responsible.
In my nursing program you were allowed 2 clinical absences. If you've never been absent then take the day off. Just make sure you call your clinical instructor before hand. That's the responsible thing to do... call first. You don't want him/her to make up your assignment for no apparent reason. I know....... it takes more than enough time to pick out patients for your fellow classmates. Stick to your gut feeling........
This is why I mentioned "they can't do anything about it". They really can't unless you have make up days, which my program never had.
Good Luck!

This is not how you begin a nursing career. You try to stick to no absences, if at all possible. Or have a very good reason to just miss it. These are learning experiences for you and you should be learning something new everyday. You should be going because you want to go, not because you have to.
What are you going to do when you actually begin working as an RN? As work ethics, you need to reconsider what you are doing.
Personally, I would go to the clincial. First of all, my guilty conscience would never let me study in peace. I'd feel guilty about fibbing. Secondly, that final clinical day just might hold that one little piece of information, or skill, or words of wisdom that may come in handy one day. You just NEVER know!:)
I totally understand your point. Once I start working there is no way I'm going to miss a day, unless I truly am sick or need to be elsewhere. But for the last day of clinical.......... come on. Don't miss the last class before a test! We had one instructor that would review for the test on that day.
Once in another class, half the students were missing the day before the test and it pissed the instructor off so much that he just started scribbling test questions on the board, and told us that if we shared them with the absent students he would be very upset when it came time to grade our papers! That was like 4-5 test question just given to the ones that showed up.
Great for us, bad for the students not there.
I NEVER miss a class unless I absolutely have to! Too much info, you never know what will happen.
