A Nursing Perspective of "Being Eaten":The "Eater" Nurse to the "Eaten" Nurse

Published

From the The Eaten Nurse to the eater Nurse

Sad is they name, O wicked one

That brings another down to make thyself feel better

Know me ye from Adam?

What wrong did I commit?

That you should treat me so.

I seek only to become a partner in this field of ours and be able to hold my own

Teach me the skills, I pray

Show me the ropes, I beg

But shame me not, I ask!

The "eater" nurse to the "eaten" nurse

Hare-brained one! How clueless thou art!

You come waltzing into the nursing world

Full of hare-brained grandiose ideas

With a jaded view of nursing already made

I seek not to eat you but to show you

And if in my eagerness I come across wrong

How can I help myself?

It is not a failing but a strength that in my eagerness to teach and show you

That I come across strong and mean to you

It is to be sure that you forget me not, as you go about

Perfecting your nursing skills

How then can I be accused of, "eating my young", when all I seek

Is a better nurse of you make

O newbie nurse, be not so harsh of me in delivering judgment

I seek only to help in your learning as the curve is steep

And consequences deep

Pray newbie nurse! Attempt to look beyond the surface of what I do

It is only for your confidence I do so

A day is coming in the not-so-distant- future when in my position you will be

I pray my thought crosses your mind on that day

So, my dear nurse colleague, be light in your judgment

For I rooted for you all the way- ANON

Forsooth! And comes a voice to clarify the noise

Of all the tender newbies so aggrieved.

Would that the babes be willing to it heed

And in so doing, cast off all their fears

Of wicked evil bats who find them sweet

And tender, all the better so to eat.

For we are not all interested in

A bite of tender newbie flesh for snack--

Ah, no, we fear that when our time doth come

(and ailing seek we succor in our pain)

That no one will be there who understands,

Who doth remember half of what we know.

This is why we rail and snip and pick

Ignoring protestations of "Abuse!"

It is because we care for those we love

And fear for when we too shall be so sick.

The Optimist has brought this point to you,

Perchance to ope thine eyes to wider shores.

Pray thee go forth, resolve to start anew,

And try to hear our message 'neath the roars.

I just want to learn

Brand new to the nursing world

Why you call me dumb?

-Haiku by Elliebean

Oh, I have been on AN for all this time and never come across a poetry-formatted thread! I lovelovelove it. We are so awesome. Great haiku.

Oops, better re-state that:

There once were some nurses on line

Who wished everything would be fine.

The young'uns would tear

And the old'uns would sneer

And everyone clicked "Post" a-sighin'.

Tis all in good spirits

Colleague of mine

We jest and merry all these time

Knowing all these while

The same cause we all thee fight

Till we realize together in this boat we all thee be

Tis trouble all day long!

The format of this thread, it pleases me,

But harsh words from learned colleagues please me not.

Would that all thou wise and seasoned healers

Wouldst temper thy tongues, yay, as with patients we ought.

A passion to pass along knowledge is virtuous, true -

But tone of voice, choice of words, these things, they teach us, too.

Do not forget in haste to share with kindness

The wisdom and the wealth that you possess.

Alas nurse colleague

Truth you thee speak

For we must learn to temper

Our words with tact and kindness as we ought

But wait!

Such kindness and tact must from new and seasoned be

So that we may all co-exist in peace!

With you, dear Optimist, I do most heartily agree!

Response to the “eater”

Begin not with the name calling, nay “hare-brained”, nay “clueless”

Thou hast heard of evidence based practice? Tis not jaded but corroborated

If thou seek not to “eat”, why devour the hopes and dreams of those who still dare to dream?

Whilst to be eager is no sin, tis a sad day when the zealot is cruel but cries “alas and alack, twas not cruelty but love that caused me to shame and degrade you in the name of good care”.

I say unto thee wise one, juxtapose not “strong” and “mean” for they be not tantamount.

Canst thou be a rock without smiting?

Will it leave thee aghast to learn that my dearest hope is to consign to oblivion the cruel memory of thee?

Oh eater, the curve is steep! If thou seek to be judged fairly, light the way with wisdom and goodness not rashness and tyranny.

Is it not wiser to teach loving care with loving care?

For truly I say unto you eater, a day may come in the not-so-distant future when thou are the invalid who seeks my tender mercies.

Pray that when that day comes, that my memory of thou tutelage is efficacious.

Postscript: Yeah, we are all in this boat together :roflmao:

This thread is funny.

I should have made a poem.
