4th grader came in complaining of a sore throat. States her throat been sore for a week now. Took her temperature and no fever. Asked her what mom said she said mom just been giving her cough medicine. ok..gave student a drink of water. Spoke with mom and mom wanted me to give her warm salt water  couldn't find any salt... gave her plain water... first time somebody ever ask for salt water .....back to class she goes just wondering if any of you school nurses had parents to ask for weird stuff

I do notice that kids ask for Benedryl. For things they shouldn't. Like headaches.

I had a 1st grader ask if in the ice in her ice pack was organic...

Yes! My little ones want either Tylenol or benedryl for everything. But sometimes the parents are clueless. I had a parent bring me a doctors order for ibuprofen and had a bottle of aspirin with him and he started to argue with me saying that aspirin is "just the generic" and "the same thing".

Or...you can't give this without a DOCTOR'S ORDER?

Why NOT?

I'm sure you can't either....remember you don't follow district's policies and procedures

We do warm salt water gargles, but I wouldn't give a child salt water to drink.

That would probably end up being a nifty laxative!

I had a kid drink it... I told them that it was for gargling. Of course, it was a kindergartener but you would think in this school full of minority students, and all of them mainly Hispanic, they would know this trick. But I guess not.

Well. If it's strong, it's effective. That is if you can keep it down. Kind of unpleasant, but not as bad as Mag Citrate. Nevermind how I know.
