A&P 1: The Spring '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Ok, no one has started this yet, so I guess I will. I start A&P I on January 18th, lab and lecture.

Here are a few good websites I have found...some are basic, some may be more indepth than your instructor asks for.....BUT it gives you a little more to look over before class starts next month! :) ....Never forget the website for your actual book too!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU

I have a question for all of you...

My Lab insructor told us the other day that we are the only community/junior college in the country that uses human cadavers for dissection. Do you think that's true? What do you all dissect? I'm assgned to do the muscles of the anterior shoulder/upper arm on a woman. I start my dissection on Monday. Wish me luck, I have no idea what I'm doing!

My cc uses them in the clasess that the premed students take. For A&P though we use cats.

We use cats at our CC as well.

I'm not sure if it's the only one, but if not, probably one of very few. You are very lucky!!!

Freaking out... we have a test on monday over osteogenisis and i dont get it... anyone have any tips? or websites?

:balloons: I know the results of my first two quizzes: 100%. :balloons:

First big test is on next Saturday.

I tried to figure out what school you are going to, but couldn't.

West Valley College in Saratoga, CA uses cadavers, and, in fact, has an advanced human anatomy class in the summer (have to take their anatomy class).

I've heard that San Jose City College uses cadavers, but do not know that for a fact.

I was told by past students that we would use cats for dissection, but recently found out that we wont be. The only items we will be dissecting in A&P 1 and 2 are a sheep brain, cow eye and heart, and a kidney from one of those two. Thats it! I am a little disappointed because I had psyched myself up for it, but relieved at the same time. I could handle a cadaver a lot better than I could have handled a cat. I am a softy for animals I guess. My rationale is that the cadaver was once a human who consciously gave his body to science at the time of death and the cat didnt have a choice. In fact my bio professor told us they were raised on farms just for this purpose YIKES!

Just thought I would let you all know that I took my first lecture exam in A&P 1 last tuesday. We got our results back the same day. I did better than I had thought, in fact I couldnt have done any better :). My next test is March 1st on the integumentary and skeletal systems. I am already studying for that test LOL.

I take the NET test on Wednesday and I am so nervous. I bought the study guide and took the practice test in the back of the book. I got three wrong out of 80 so I think I should be ok. I am going to continue to study though till that night before the test lol. I am so scared because everything is riding on this test. Has anyone took the NET and used the ERI NET study guide? I was just wondering how close the questions were to the actual test. I had heard that they are relatively close and if you can pass the practice test, you can pass the NET. Anyone know how true that is?

TIA!

Again, this is complete memorization. Here's a general thing.

There are two types of bone development.

1) membrane (Intramembraneous)

- Flat bones use this to develop

- Membrane is made up Dense Irregular C.T.

- Mesnchyme becomes osteoprogenators that

become osteoblasts

- Bones start to build

- Spicules form

- Osteoblasts become Osteocytes

- Starts to join each other to form lattice network to

form Trabachulae

2) cartilage (Endochondrial)

- Inside cartilage

- Hyaline cartilage model

- Avascular, but blood vessels are surrounding in a

membrane

- Cells in center swell up & die because of lack of

blood vessels

- Forms holes

- Blood vessels enter holes

- Cells become Osteocytes

- Cartilage goes away

--After birth, the length of a long bone occurs at the

--epiphyseal plate, until fully grown. Then it becomes

--the epipyseal line. It is controlled by hormones.

--(Sex & Growth hormones)

**Osteoblasts are bone building cells.

**(Mesnchyme becomes osteoprogenators that

become osteoblasts)

**Osteoclasts are bone destroying cells.

**(mesenchyme becomes osteoclasts).

##Growth in length is Interstitial Growth.

##Growth in diameter is Appostional Growth.

##Changes in inside of bone is Remodeling Growth.

++PTH takes calcium from bones and puts it into blood.

activates osteoclasts

++Calcitonin takes calcium from blood and puts it in bones.

activates osteoblasts

Hope this simplifies it some for you. Do you have a specific question? That maybe easier. Good luck to you.

Way to go, and good luck on the exam!

I'm not sure about our lecture test, but our 1st lab practical is at the end of this month.

Is yours covering markings of the skeleton?

Yeah for me!!!

I got over 100% on the first lecture exam!!!! I only missed a few and he gave extra points so I ended up with 119/115!!!

I have the next one this Tuesday! and the big Histology lab exam Thursday--hope I can keep it up!

Most people failed the 1st test and they all looked at me like I was a genius or something--made me feel pretty good!!!

WAY TO GO!!!!!!

I understand people failing the first exam. People just don't realize exactly how much you have to study A&P...unless you have a photographic memory! lol

I'm pretty sure our first lab practical is on the 24th. We'll probably schedule our first lecture test on Tuesday, so it should be within the next couple of weeks as well. I'm ready to get it over with, and start studying the bones and muscles for the next lab practical. LOTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS of memorization with that!!!!!

Great job Okie2!!! :balloons:

My first lecture exam has been rescheduled for the 16th and lab exam is on the 23rd.

How much time do you spend studying anatomy?

We started on the 6th of February and up until 10 days ago I have been studying at least 3 hours a day. 10 days ago I increased it to probably 5-6 a day. I spend 30mins here and there reviewing notes and then 1hr or so once or twice reading the chapter. I can't afford to sit for longer than an hour, there is a certain 2 year old that runs around :)

I am ready, too, to finish with this exam so I can start studying the bones.

I feel like a nerd talking to some girls in class, no one seems to be studying as much as I am :uhoh3: I hope it pays off.
