I'm really struggling to understand how in the world imposing tariffs on Mexico will reduce fentanyl and illegal immigration.

I always had the idea that addressing root causes of migrants leaving their countries would in the long term lead to less illegal immigration. The goal to work towards strengthening our southern neighbors would ultimately be stabilizing.

Seems like the tariffs will have the opposite effect on Mexico's economy, leading to more migration more drug activity. And of course our appetite for drugs is not reduced when rising costs of food, vehicles, and materials in general negatively impacts our economy.

Where is the common sense?

*The top civil servant at the Treasury Department, David Lebryk, left unexpectedly on Friday after Trump-affiliated officials expressed interest in stopping certain payments made by the federal government, according to three people familiar with the situation

You are struggling to understand the thinking of a mentally ill old man. There is no common sense. There is petty vengeance, bully behavior, and baloney.

The Trump voters are practicing the steps necessary to maintain a remarkable level of ignorance about the rapid implementation of P2025. I can't imagine that their media is reporting much to them on what is going on.  They're more engaged with talking about how old and feeble Biden was than about how old and crazy Trump is.

I would take back old and feeble right now

Physically Biden is old and feeble in his appearance.  Intellectually and cognitively, Biden is still functioning above Trump's highest capacity.  The propaganda was really effective.  It's telling that the media was very focused upon Biden's cognitive health but is not at all interested in Trump's, isn't it?  That's because it was a dishonesty strategy from the right wing that the legacy media bought into.  Propaganda works.

Trump will impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for no good reason.

ABC News  2/1/25:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responds to Trump tariffs

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to President Donald Trump's move to impose 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports to the U.S.

In a lengthy statement in Spanish on social media platform X, Sheinbaum said she has instructed officials in her government to implement Plan B, "which includes tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of Mexico's interests."

Trudeau announces retaliatory tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to Trump's tariffs Saturday evening by announcing the country will implement 25% tariffs on $155 billion of U.S. goods.

"This includes immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods effective Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products in 21 days," the prime minister said.

Trudeau encouraged Canadians to read labels at the grocery store and choose "Canadian rye over Kentucky bourbon," forgoing orange juice from Florida and "changing Summer vacation plans" to visit places within Canada.

"We will get through this challenge," Trudeau said.

This is not right': Outrage as major government agency accused of 'breaking the law'

The National Transportation Safety Board made a pro-Elon Musk announcement that took onlookers by storm.

The NTSB said over the weekend that it would only be announcing news about major aircraft accidents on one particular social media platform....

A popular lawyer known as southpaw said, "This amounts to a federal subsidy of this platform—which is owned by the president's biggest donor, who as it happens has made it into a gathering place for Nazis."

"It is a self-inflicted wound to the credibility and integrity of the NTSB, a once world class safety org," the attorney wrote....

Trump's FCC chief opens investigation into NPR and PBS

Quote

President Trump's new head of the Federal Communications Commission has ordered an investigation of NPR and PBS, with an eye toward unraveling federal funding for all public broadcasting.

"I am concerned that NPR and PBS broadcasts could be violating federal law by airing commercials," Chairman Brendan Carr wrote on Wednesday to the presidents and chief executives of NPR and PBS, Katherine Maher and Paula A. Kerger, respectively. "In particular, it is possible that NPR and PBS member stations are broadcasting underwriting announcements that cross the line into prohibited commercial advertisements."...

See that news now reporting Trump to Order Aid Agency to Be Put Under State Department loosing independence,

...Democrats insist Trump doesn't have the unilateral authority to restructure USAID and further erode USAID's historically independent mission, as its existence is codified in federal law.

The deeper integration, should Trump successfully go through with it, would allow him to align foreign aid with his "America First" vision, advocates of the move say. The approach could mean fewer funds for longstanding programs to help poor nations develop their economies, strengthen the rule of law, cope with climate change and boost gender equality....

The idea for downsizing USAID, stripping it of its independence and merging it into the State Department has been discussed in Washington for years. The Project 2025 blueprint for the Trump administration called for fusing the two agencies together and included a proposal that would make the USAID chief simultaneously the head of State's foreign assistance office....

The order is already facing political challenges, and it may face legal questions since money for USAID is appropriated by Congress and its authorities are ratified in the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961. While former President John F. Kennedy created USAID via an executive order, its independent status was codified in 1998 legislation and reaffirmed by Congress last year. Democrats insist that Congress must pass legislation before there is a bureaucratic reorganization.

"This'd be illegal and against our national interests,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer posted on social media Friday night as rumors about the planned order began to circulate....

@NRSKarenRN this is a political blitzkrieg.  They will seize as much power as they can, as quickly as they can, legal or not.  Once the toothpaste is out of the tube it's near impossible to ever get it all back together for repackaging.  Chaos is part of the strategy.

Our colleagues and neighbors voted for this.
