I am curious how many of you HAVE to have a school nurse certification with the dept. of ed. in your state along with your license from the BON?

Specializes in School nursing.

In MA to work in a public school, you need licensure from the Department of Education in addition your nursing license. It may depend for private and charter schools.

Specializes in Pediatrics Retired.

Not a Texas requirement.

It is now becoming law in NH.. however some of us do not meet the requirements to get the cert. Called the contact for this specific cert at the DOE, and they had no answer for me... frustrating.

Specializes in ICU/community health/school nursing.

Would they accept the NCSN certification in lieu of that? Assuming one already had it?

Specializes in Home Health,Dialysis, MDS, School Nurse.

Not required in SD. I would love to get accredited, but I only have an AD in nursing so I'm not eligible.

Specializes in Telemetry, Gastroenterology, School Nrs.

I have it. It is required in Ohio.

Ruby_Jane, you cannot get NCSN without a BSN (I believe). One of our nurses is ADN, I am ADN with 6 classes left for my BSN.

In Illinois we do not need certification to work as a school nurse but we do need it to do special education assessments.

Specializes in med-surg, IMC, school nursing, NICU.

In Maryland you didn't need a certification. I had my BSN and was hired with no issue. We even had some LPNs but they were considered "team nurses" and had to work directly with an RN.

In NJ you need a certification. I applied to a few schools just this past week to try and get in so I can start working as a school nurse again in a few years.

You are right, and that is new the last five years? I got my NCSN three years ago. GO YOU!!! Six classes left!!

I don't have a certification but I do have a separate license with the Department of Education. It allows me to use the title Licensed School Nurse. In order to get this license I paid about $100 and had to show that I had both my RN and PHN licenses through my state BON as well as be finger printed. I renew my LSN license every 5 years and have to do 125 CEUs in that time period some of which have to be in certain areas such as mental health and suicide prevention.
