I know lots of you know that I've struggled with my career change from NICU to school nursing this year but...it hasn't gotten better really. I have moments, sometimes a couple of weeks when I don't hate it but really it's not for me. I've decided to finish out this school year and look for a new job this summer while continuing to pick up shifts in my old NICU. Not sure what I'm going to try next but I know this isn't it. :cry:

That's the beauty of nursing, diversity. There is no way I could work NICU, I am very thankful there are those with that gifting. Good luck with your search and hopefully you will find that perfect fit.

Well, just because you aren't a school nurse anymore after this school year doesn't mean you can't come hang out with us cool kids here. My middle child was born at 26 weeks, so I have a great respect for NICU nurses as they and the docs saved her life (she's 17 years old now!!). Do you think you will go back to NICU or try something else?

Well at this point I am going to just pick up shifts in NICUs around my area as an agency nurse. I'm blessed to live in an urban area with lots of NICUs and Special Care Nurseries. My agency pay rate is great and will allow me to only work 24 hours a week. I may try pediatric clinic at some point or I may go back to permanent staff in NICU. I'm not sure yet. I'm hoping that agency work will allow me to have the ultimate flexibility in that I will still not have to work holidays or weekends. The uncertainty of a steady paycheck is scary but with the plethora of options around here I don't imagine it'll be a problem. One of the hospitals with a Level III NICU has NINE RNs going on maternity leave this summer and they've been begging my agency to send them contract nurses so that is a possibility. My girls are both signed up for day camp for the summer so that I can be free to work. We'll see what happens. :up:

You have all been so wonderful to me and I will miss being one of you. And, of course, I shall always wear pink on Wednesdays.

I'm going through something similar and I haven't been doing this for that long. I don't know if it's because I miss the hospital or what. I'm pushing myself to finish out the school year because I don't want to leave my kids in a bind - there are no replacements for me and we have no subs.

That's the beauty of nursing. Easy pickin' on jobs. I did my time in the hospital and am glad to be a school nurse now. It is a little boring most days, but it is zero stress and has lots of time off. Good luck in whatever you do next.
