Kindergartners taking off clothes at school

A kindergarten teacher told me that because it has been so hot lately, some of her students are taking off their shirts/disrobing in class. She has explained on several occasions that clothes stay on at school, but some kids aren't getting the picture. The teacher has asked me to talk briefly to her class about keeping clothes on, thinking that a "guess speaker" might have more impact. Thoughts/suggestions?

This is just weird. Maybe they need air-conditioning or fans? A guest speaker for keeping their clothes on? Weird. Weird. Weird. At the most, I think a parent conference would be indicated for students who don't "get it".

Sounds like a parenting issue, not a school nurse/guest speaker issue.

Yeah, it amazes me what they ask the school nurse to do.

Three times this week a 2nd grade boy has come up to me in the hallway to announce "I've peed three times this morning but no poop yet". I asked him why he told me that and he said he was supposed to tell the school nurse.

I asked his teacher why this was happening and she said he asks to go to the bathroom up to seven times a day. She told him she might have to ask the school nurse if there was something wrong with him that made him pee so much. He saw me in the hallway and just decided to tell me.

Another mom this week sent a note in asking the school nurse to make sure her son ate all his lunch - he was coming home with most of his lunch uneaten.

That's not my job.

Teacher - call the parents.

Parent - come to school and sit with your son at lunch to see what is distracting him. Or maybe, make him a better lunch.

(This should go in the School Nurse forum . ..I'll ask a mod to move it).

It sounds to me like the teacher needs to send a general note home to all parents explaining the situation and asking parents to dress their children in cool clothing that conforms with the dress code. They should also address the issue that clothing must remain on.

You might also suggest that the teacher asks parents to provide a drink (such as bottled water) that could be placed on ice for their child for later in the day.

This is not a nurse issue.

I find whenever they're not sure what to do in the building it somehow becomes a Nursing issue. Give me a break! Tell the kid to keep their clothes on, it's inappropriate to not wear them in school and if they don't comply, call the parents!

Hey, did you apply for MY job here in CA? :) Because Nov 1 is my last day and we need a nurse here.

I have the problem this year of kids (kinder) not able to wipe after using the restroom - teacher sends them in and they walk out into the hallway with pants around ankles asking to be wiped. I have had to make a few phone calls to parents asking them to work on this issue at home :(

THIS! I have had a number of kiddos that can't/won't wipe themselves. I'm not quite sure why the teachers send them up to my office instead of giving them a wipe and telling them do just give it a shot. I don't wipe them! I also had a teacher send up a K student because she was afraid to flush the toilet...not quite sure what I was supposed to do with that one!
