I'm so excited that I got the job offer for the school nurse position that I interviewed for last week. There are so many wonderful opportunities that go along with the position like helping with Girls on the Run, Ending Hunger in our community and Santa's Helpers (providing gifts to children who wouldn't otherwise have gifts), etc. I'm just so excited to start this job!

Specializes in Home Health,Dialysis, MDS, School Nurse.

Congrats on the job! I just accepted a job offer for school nurse also! Sounds like some great programs too!

Congrats! Sounds like you have a great enthusiasm for this work!

I love to hear nurses passionate about their work/specialty. Just goes to show that we all have different talents and callings even though we're all "nurses". I love the diversity that our awesome career provides!

Congrats on the job!

are you guys new school nurses, or do you experience in peds already? Just curious. I would like to be a school nurse but here everyone wants experience.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Oncology, School Nursing, OB.

Congrats! I would suggest your first year to give yourself permission to just figure the job out before jumping into every committee so you don't get too overwhelmed. Offer to help if you feel comfortable but don't offer to be in charge that first year. My principal asked me to head up the Santa program my first year because the nurse had always done it. Problem was I didn't know the kids/families well yet and I was still trying to get my required duties down. I passed which was a good decision because I saw the person who did do it didn't have much help. By the next year I was ready to tackle a lot of that and the person that had it before was a big help. I wouldn't have had that much help the first time. Just be careful, they will put on the nurse everything if you don't set boundaries.

That's one of the great things of being a school nurse-being a major part of helping kids and families first hand. If only some of these families didn't expect it and were more appreciative...sigh. That's a whole different can of worms. It's still a good feeling though. I think you're going to do great!!!

Congratulations :)

I have no experience in Peds. I have experience in ER, psych and neuro.

Specializes in Critical Care.

Congratulations!!

Congrats!!! I think Blue_Moon makes some great points... the first year is a big adjustment and can be a little taxing (especially if you are alone), so helping out and pitching in is awesome, but be careful not to overextend yourself.

It's great to see your enthusiasm about the job and getting to help others in the community! You rock!

How exciting! You will love it.
