Our district has ended our dreaded "no nit" policy!!! I get to update my staff this afternoon about the wonderful news, including no more classroom checks or letters home.

I have a strange amount of joy for how this is going to make them squirm! (insert evil laughter!)

Congrats! I presented the research at our last nurse's meeting and I get the distinct feeling that it was thrown in the trash.

Our nurses keep presenting current recommendations. Just today I was told quit talking about it. Principal didn't want to hear about empty nit casings 3" down hair shaft. " no nits means no nits and we are not changing our policy!"

Does it occur to this nit wit that excluding students needlessly from school is costing his district money? I assume that most school districts receive at least part of their funding from state money, based on average daily attendance. If he understands nothing else, he should understand dollars and cents.

Yep.

Personally, I am wondering when a parent will sue the school for excluding their child with nits. But maybe the stigma is so present everywhere that not even that would happen.

Oh, the moans, groans and complaints! I think I won some of them over with research and facts...some you will just never get through to. Thankfully, my principal is completely on board after hearing the evidence based facts around the issue. I never thought I would be so well versed on the life cycle and transmission of head lice. Score one for the nurses!

YAY!! We let nit kids stay but our district health coordinator wants to get the policy changed so that even live lice stays. I'm in the same boat as you, I can't wait to watch the panic ensue.

Scrubs- You took the words right out of my mouth. I wish I had a quarter for every time I have said these words.

So tired of dealing with this! I listened to a looooong "chewing" yesterday from a mom and dad (yes, I had the priviledge of speaking to both). They were angry that their child had come home for the 2nd time with lice. They know who it comes from and think I should report those parents for abuse. OK so after the 3rd time, I send in the suspected abuse report...well, does that mean that when your kid gets it for the 3rd time, I can report you also? Hmmmmm stutter stutter...

Am I reading this correctly? YOU reported a family for abuse because their child had lice three times?
