Our district has ended our dreaded "no nit" policy!!! I get to update my staff this afternoon about the wonderful news, including no more classroom checks or letters home.
I have a strange amount of joy for how this is going to make them squirm! (insert evil laughter!)
YAY!! We let nit kids stay but our district health coordinator wants to get the policy changed so that even live lice stays. I'm in the same boat as you, I can't wait to watch the panic ensue.
Yes, wait for the panic - buckle your seatbelt, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!!
This is such an ongoing battle and we recently changed our district policy and stopped sending home the letters. We present evidence-based info all the time but lice causes so much hysteria that nobody pays attention. Parents are always outraged about something with regards to lice. They especially love that we no longer do classroom-wide checks once we know there is a case of lice in the room!!
Of course we had the really crazed parent who took the no letters thing all the way up to the superintendent and lo and behold - the school where this parent's child attends is back to sending the letters. The rest of us are sticking to our guns but have been told by our lead nurse to use our discretion. We also changed to live lice can stay but it is also left to our discretion.

Oh dear NO!! Sorry I did not make myself clear. That is what the parents wanted me to do to other parents! But not to them of course :/ I do not report lice cases!
