Nurse Corps Scholarship Program

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello!

I am currently looking into ways I can pay for nursing school. I get no financial help from my parents - mom is on disability, so I would be taking out loans to go to school.

Someone told me about the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program - in which they help you pay for tuition, books, etc., and give monthly living stipends as well .. the only catch is you have to work in a in a critical shortage facility for two years upon graduation. This sounds like a really good exchange in my current predicament.

My question is, what's the catch (other than the fact that you have to work in CSF areas)? Has anyone been a part of the NC Scholarships program? Can you share with me your experiences regarding it?

Thank you

Is there an age requirement?

I have never received the scholarship but I do plan on applying this year. Just make sure that the hospitals you are interested in are possible places of employment fulfill the requirements for the program. Also there is only a 6-month period after you graduate that the program allows you. During that time you have to pass the NCLEX, find a job in an appropriate hospital or healthcare facility, and be working full time. If these requirements are not filled you might be found in default and required to pay back scholarship ( and I think that might affect your credit but I am not sure.) Look up the application booklet that is on the site and read it because it contains all he details. It may be for you or it may not be. Just remember that the receiving the scholarship is like a contract and you have to follow the stipulations. Some people would rather just take out the loans than be limited in where they can work and others do not mind.

Good luck

That sounds pretty awesome. If I didn't have a family, I would consider it. I think I have also seen something for IHS (indian health services?) where you also make a commitment to working with/for tribes around the country that are underserved. keep in mind that these may be rural areas where access to medical help may be more limited. but i think these are great ways to serve communities, especially if you have less "attachments" in life.

I'm actually in the process of applying but there is just one issue, can you still apply if you are in Pre-Nursing? I'm going to watch the webinar tonight.

I don't think so. I think you need to have proof of acceptance to a nursing program. Don't sweat it if you haven't gotten that yet--just get everything else ready, the deadline isn't until April so you have time.

This really does sound like a great opportunity! Can those of you who are able to make it to get the info via the webinar post some of the info afterwards? :-)

I'm planning on applying this year too :) I actually just found out which Nursing School I am going to so I just have to get some of the paperwork submitted and my application is submitted. Have any of y'all finished submitting it yet?

I'm in the process of applying myself. I just got my requests sent of for my letters of recommendation, so now I'm working on my supporting documentation. It's a process, but it would totally be worth it.

I have a family, but I live extremely rurally- in the Southern Black Hills of SD- so nearly every medical facility should apply (I also live close to Pine Ridge Hospital). I'm not too concerned about finding employment if I were to be accepted.

The only thing that might hold some people back that isn't totally specified in the qualifications is that because it's so incredibly competitive (only 200-300 accepted out of 2000-3000), they only really consider applicants with EFCs of zero. Of course, they say they accept EFCs up to 5,500, but from what I've read, that's really not who gets accepted. They're looking for the folks with the highest need.

I'm interested to know what was covered in the webinar!! My other understanding is that they are VERY particular about everything matching up right and being submitted correctly. They won't even look at you if your application is incomplete.

Good luck, everyone!!
