Wanted some advice on my 1st semester grades. I took 4 classes.

College Algebra - C+

English 101- B+

Communication- B-

College Reading Skills(CRS)- C

My GPA is a 2.6. So far students older than me said since its my first semester of college, its expected. But others say its really BAD especially if I want to get into Nursing. Next semester ill be taking A&P1, SOCY, Psych, Stats, and English Comp.

What's your opinion on my grades? /:

OP you're grades aren't awful, not for a first semester with only 4 classes. Obiously they aren't great, but they aren't "awful" as another poster so rudely said. You have many pre-req classes to go and many oppourtunities to bring up your GPA, so do not be discouraged. Follow some of the advice I gave you in the other post, such as re-evaluating your study habits, speaking with your professors about any concepts that confuse you, and using any resources available at your school such as the tutoring center, and you will be fine. Your first semester gave you a taste of real college classes, now that it's over, get in there and rock those classes next semester. Also, look into what types of study habits you have. Go to Google's search engine and type in VARK. Take the learning styles quiz and it will help you determine how you study best, whether it's auditory (recording and listing to lectures), visual (drawing, looking at photo's, ect.), if reading the text from your book helps the best, or if it's a mixture of all of those things.

I'm a very, very visual learner, and I learn by drawing and doodling diagrams, and by using lots of photo's to help me visualize the concepts in classes like the sciences. Even in math, I learn best by staying after class and writing out the concepts and problems on the board with a marker and working my way through it. I'm hands on and visual, it's how I learn best. When you figure out your learning style, it'll help you determine how to study more efficiently. Good luck!

Since this is your first semester you still have time to pull your GPA up, and your GPA is not awful! Don't listen to the negative comments on here. My first semester in College I had a low GPA as well. but my problem was that I had to get use to studying and I had to get away from my friends and family who did not understand that I had to study and didnt have time to hangout. Everyone will have their own issues or reasons on why their study habits are not working for them. If I were you I would sit down and make a plan of study and a plan on how I would study for my future classes. Right now I have a 3.3 GPA and I just finished my first year in pre-nursing. I think that you should not take 5 classes this semester, and not including that you have a lab with your A&P class. maybe you should slow up your pace a bit until you get your study habits better.

I also agree, drop at at least one the classes until you get a better grasp of your study habits and learning style. Psychology, sociology and english aren't too difficult, even with taking A&P I. I would suggest dropping statistics though. It's a very heavy class if you aren't strong in math, and will take up a great deal of time. I don't suggest taking it with A&P I. I'd hold off on statistics and take it maybe either by itself over the summer, or with a lighter load over fall semester.

I'll be blunt. That was the easiest course load you can take and your grades need to reflect that. Study more or get remediation in a hurry b/c your nursing options will become slim to none with another semester like that one.

My opinion on my grades is that they're not very good. Terrible? No. You're sitting right at average. But in order to get into competitive programs, average doesn't cut it.

But what's done is done. If YOU aren't happy with your grades, it's time to try harder next semester.

Unfortunately, the people telling you that those grades are ok are wrong. That was an easy course load and you didn't do very well. I would seriously consider retaking college algebra to get that grade up. Your GPA is really low - at my school you wouldn't be passing if you were in the nursing program.

Like many have suggested, you need to evaluate what happened during this semester. Did you get help when you were struggling with the material? Your school has a learning center designed to help students with this type of material.

That said, all hope is not lost. You can get your GPA up. You will have to work at it, that much is obvious. Go get tested at the learning center to see what your testing/learning style is. You may have test anxiety and not even know it.

Finally, know this: Nursing school is much harder than gen-req courses. I had a 3.8 GPA when I started nursing school. Now I have a 3.4. It's a different learning style and more is expected. Be prepared for that.

You passed your classes in your first semester of nursing school! that is a huge accomplishment and you should be proud of yourself. My first semester I got two Cs, and i did absolutely fine and ended up graduating with honors. It takes time to learn how to study in college, especially nursing. You will need to work on your GPA but dont get discouraged - just put more time into your studies and stay organized. You'll get there and youll be a fantastic nurse :) let me know if you need any advice on books or study tips!

It's true that many 1st year college students don't do well...very common. It's also true that if your GPA remains at 2.6, chances of getting into a nursing program is close to zero.

It's not too late to boost your GPA though, so think about retaking the courses where you got C's and make sure that you do very well going forward.

Best of luck!

You guys need to stop sugar coating everything, she needs a wake up call. HER GRADES ARE AWFUL! That was the easiest course load you can possibly have, and it gets MUCH harder, and plus those are just her undergrad classes. My post may have been a little rude, but it was the truth, the truth hurts. Nursing school is competitive, and there are a lot of smart people out there. She needs to take two classes at a time. Stop giving this girl false hope saying she is going to be able to do this next semester which is much more difficult, "if she puts her mind to it". That is not enough. She needs to cut the class load, AND put her mind to it. It is very important that you make as many A's as possible. The lowest GPA that i have herd of in my class is a 3.6. A C in college reading if you want to use algorithimics is in theory an F in A&P.

Sugar-coating is bad, but there are ways to tell the truth upfront without being discouraging or downright nasty. Learn how to be more tactful and it will serve you well in the real world.

Apparently not failing = amazing grades!

Tactless or not, with the exception of saying she will most likely fail next semester, nothing Trenbolone Acetate has said is wrong. Her grades are too low. Those are easy classes. Her GPA guarantees her application won't even be looked at by most nursing schools. She MUST do something different - and apparently desperately needs a wake up call. I agree that taking fewer classes would probably help.

Your grades are awful. Those are all pretty basic classes relative to simplicity. If you cant ace those, you are likely to fail your next semester, which are much more demanding and critical. The problem with students is that they are to damn eager to get their degree as soon as possible and therefore limit themselves intellectually as as you are less likely to retain such knowledge. You need to reevaluate if this is realy what you want, because when you truly want something bad enough, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it, even if that means giving up any sort of personal/social life, especially with the knowledge that nursing school is very competitive. Take 2 classes at a time, NO MORE.

Wooooow, did you fall out of the Hate tree and hit every branch? I agree, do not listen to all this negativity. You need to concentrate on what you can do better and strive to find what type of studying works best for you. College is completely different from high school and unfortunately, you really don't realize this until you start your classes. Also, you may be able to retake the C classes but don't bank on that. Talk to your school's registrar to see if you can. Hang in there and do the best you can!
