Wanted some advice on my 1st semester grades. I took 4 classes.

College Algebra - C+

English 101- B+

Communication- B-

College Reading Skills(CRS)- C

My GPA is a 2.6. So far students older than me said since its my first semester of college, its expected. But others say its really BAD especially if I want to get into Nursing. Next semester ill be taking A&P1, SOCY, Psych, Stats, and English Comp.

What's your opinion on my grades? /:

I would be concerned about the low grade in the college reading skills course. Being able to read reasonably quickly, comprehend, and remember information is going to be hugely important in your pre-reqs and in nursing school. I would do some hard thinking about why you didn't do well. Was it difficult material? I would retake it. Was it because you didn't do the assignments in a timely manner? Re-evaluate your study skills. Good luck to you!

Now that is the attitude of someone that will probably graduate nursing school.

You guys are right.. I'll be working my ass off next semester. Thanks for the criticism.

I had a GPA of 2.6 from both community college and from LPN school overall when I was accepted into a BSN program; however, my science grades were a 3.0 GPA. Also, most schools have a requirement for an entrance exam-I scored in the 92% in the test. When I finished nursing school, 2.89 GPA overall. Passed both NCLEX first time.

A lot of my grades were due to test anxiety. My family also has a history of dyslexia as well. I suggest researching all possible reasons on your performance in college. I was a honors and top 3% in my class in high school, in college more of a generally B student at the end of the tunnel. Maybe you need to adjust, definitely build on your reading and study skills. And ONE thing I suggest is SCALE back on your studies. Is there a requirement for you to do a full load??? Take 2-3 classes, then build on there. But FIRST evaluate your approach to studying and understanding how you learn. Good Luck!!

PS...even students with 4.0s entering a nursing program have the hardest time in nursing school...I have consoled many who do not understand the material. Nursing is a tough subject. But with the right type of attitude, awareness of what type of learning style you have, and you will go far and have a successful career!

I would lighten the load just a bit. I don't think your grades are terrible, but you should definatley strive for a 3.0 or better in your math and science classes. Get a tutor or some type of help if you find yourself sinking. Good luck to you!!

My first semester in the nursing program at my school was a real shock. I was so used to making all A's and I had to really bust my hump and got a few B's. I just finished my OB Nursing class and got a 76 on the final. Thats the lowest grade Ive gotten on a test in college. Be prepared to work hard because it only gets harder as you advance. Especially when you get to Critical Care, which is my nexy semester.

Do you typically struggle with reading skills and such? Or did you not dedicate the time? There is a difference between having a weak area and not dedicating the time to your studies. Your grades are not horrible, but they are not the best either. You have plenty of room for improvement. I cant give you any advice unless I understand your situation. If you struggle with academics in general, I would suggest getting a tutor for your weaker subjects. If you are having a problem dedicating the time to your studies, then I suggest you get a day planner and/or an assignment book. College is tough, and nursing school even tougher. Your classes are just going to get harder, so study study study and when your tired of studying, study even harder. It is tiresome and it feels endless but when you put in your all you will reap the benefits. A&P is very heavy in memorization. You need to learn to appreciate the time it takes to memorize the material. I cannot even begin to tell you how long I would spend studying for that class (and my school at the made the class relatively easy compared to the school I am at now). I'm not going to lie, getting into a nursing program is very hard and very competitive. I had a 3.5 GPA when I was accepted into my program. As it stands, you really need higher than a 2.6 to get into a nursing program. I would suggest taking the classes you got C's in over again. Try to get A's in all your non pre req courses. Those are usually pretty easy.
