I'm on the alternate list...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

...and pretty far down, from my understanding. I called the college today and they couldn't give me the number, but I'm supposed to get a letter tomorrow telling me how far down...I think I am lower than #8, but they only allow 50 students in and there isn't another nursing school in this area.

They are telling me not to worry about it, but that doesn't keep me from crying.

What sucks is there are college students with a LOWER GPA than mine that got in...they used my high school GPA when I had over 50 hours of college credits and over a 3.0 GPA...all because I didn't have an Associate's Degree. The advisor didn't tell me that last August, so I didn't think it was necessary to complete my AS (what can you do with a AS in general studies? Nothing!).

The Dean disagrees with the decision, but he doesn't care enough to step in and make an exception.

....and these schools wonder why their graduation rate isn't higher.

If you are #8 then I think you still have a good shot at getting a spot. My school is very hard to get into and they told me that they had 20 alternates last year and all got in. Keep your head up and stay positive because life happens and some people have to decline because something coms up. Good Luck!

Thanks, that does make me feel better. I called the Director to see how the wait list works, and she said that for the past several years they have went through everyone on the alternate list so that helped ease the pain a little

She said the first cuts will come in May when some students GPA drops...all letters are conditional upon you maintaining your GPA to the standard that you were admitted or higher....so anyone that drops below standard, or let's say, fails Anatomy for the 2nd time, fails Chemistry, all get dropped.

It's just going to be hard to buy my student uniform and wonder if I am ever going to get to wear it.

I know it's easier said than done, but don't get down yet. I'm sure there were plenty of those "high school students" that may have gotten accepted that could choose other schools. Even #8 is good....and I am willing to bet that you will get in for this fall. There are SO many reasons why people might not take a spot.....finances, circumstances change, etc. Please don't get down. Let's see where you are when you get your letter tomorrow. Hugs to you.

And what a crock! If I applied to that school I'd never get in if they went by my HS transcripts from 15 years ago. I was D student then!

THIS is great! Why wouldn't it be the same this year, plus, if you know you are 8 and under, you are SO in!

I am sure you will get in!! Try not to stress. And I would start getting ready as many might accept and cancel last minute. Congrats on getting this far!! You should be proud.

GottaGetIn...I read your post and you actually made me stop crying and laugh a little!

I made it clear to them that I would be getting my CPR certification and have my shots ready, etc...I want them to verbally know that I will be ready at a moment's notice.

Now...not sure if this is asking medical advice, but here goes...I have heard that some people have TB and don't know it...seems like I read somewhere here on the board that if you test positive, that they can give you meds for it, but it takes a 6 week round of antibiotics before you can test negative...if I read this right...would it be best to go two months prior to school starting to get the TB test just in case?

I don't want anything to screw things up.

Hang in there hun! I am in a VERY similar situation. They decided to "weight" those who had credit at the university. I was told basically not to worry about things b/c I have a great GPA only to find out I am on the waitlist right now. Basically, a lot of them have a lower GPA then me but got in b/c of geographical advantage. (I am in another state right now). It kinda bums me out just b/c I would've tried to take an online course or something had I known the real deal. *sigh*. Hope for the best right??!!

I would call and ask if it would matter. It is true that it can be dormant. At least according to my Micro teacher ;)

Good Luck! I was on the waitlist for this semster and got called the Friday before classes started. The funny thing is, I had finally got over it and was fine with not starting until fall. Now I'm doing great in all of my classes and so glad to be in!

Hey there, your not alone there are many of us out there in the same situation, so please dont get down!

Ive been trying to stay busy and keep my mind off of it. I walked 5 miles today havent done that in forever! I don't even know where I fall on the list or how many alternates they sent letters out too, that would atleast help me guage my chances of getting in.

Perhaps we should start a support group thread for alternates.. with some catchy little title lol

Anyway I'm going to go on planning things like I have been accepted because I know someday (hopefully someday soon) I'll be able to say that I too have been accepted.

Just remember...every single person that got in has a 50/50 chance to decline the invite because 95% percent of us apply to more than one program...if we get into more than one...then we decline the others...that opens up spots fast...they wouldn't have alternate lists if they didn't need them in order to keep all the spots filled by the time the program starts.

Keep your head up! ;)
