Do my last semester of pre-reqs matter since I'll get a decision after the fact?

I am currently finishing up my last 3 pre-reqs this semester and have already applied to four programs (2 are ivy league institutions for BSN/MSN and the other 2 are great schools for accelerated BSN).

My last final will be December 23rd. Admissions decisions go out in January/February. I have all As (and an A+ :) ) in my completed pre-reqs except an A- in A&P2 and a B in Chem (which 2 of the programs arent considering as a pre-req). The courses I am taking now are A&P2, Micro and Nutrition. Besides Nutrition it does not look like I'll be getting As, maybe I'll even just get by with Cs (which would suck so bad!).

However, since I would know whether I will be admitted or not before my final grades come in do my last semester grades even matter?? Will the programs take back an offer if I get those Cs?? Or is this last semester of pre-req thing only really considered for prenursing students who havent been doing so well in the other pre-reqs and so the admissions committee places higher emphasis on their last grades vs. a student who has done well?

Any help would be awesome!!

It probably depends on the school. Where I got, you have to get at least B's or your acceptance will be revoked.

I would still try to get Bs or higher no matter if they count or not. Reason being is if you get denied at all the programs you applied to, then you will have to reapply and they will definitely count. Also, after you graduate and pass NCLEX, if you later decide to goor a higher degree, you will need a good grades to be competitive for furthe programs.

Many times they accept a student with the understanding that the other prerequisites will meet their minimum requirements. So if you get 2.0 in your A&P and they require a2.5, it is a no go and then they would call the next person on the waiting list to replace your spot. You can do it. Work your butt off and make it happen. Good luck.

While I cannot speak for all of the 1,000+ schools of nursing in the country, we reserve the option to rescind offers of admissions -- and we have done so.

I think those grades will come back to haunt you if you don't try your hardest to get at least a B. You are taking 2 heavy duty classes together, but the grades matter as well as the content of these 2 classes. I have seen others post that A&P II is what you use most in nursing school! If your GPA drops it can sometimes affect employment opportunities or opportunities to pursue more education after nursing school!

I will be in the same situation as you when I apply to nursing school. I agree with the other posters. It probably doesn't matter but it would be in your best interest to at LEAST get a B because like one said, if you don't get in this time you will have to apply somewhere else with those bad grades, then what? Also, you might want to further your education after this and you can't with crappy grades, especially in classes as heavily weighed as those. Do your best now so you won't have to retake them later.

It depends on the program's admissions requirements. Some programs will give you provisional acceptance based on your current transcript, but could drop you or put you on a waiting list if your grades drop.

In any case, why would you want to blow off your grades and just get the bare minimum? You'll need a solid understanding of the info in your prereqs as you go through nursing school. Also, if you plan to go on for an advanced degree, you're going to wish you kept your GPA up.

Yes, for many colleges and universities, admission offers are contingent on final grades. Sometimes it even says that in acceptance letters. The best thing you can do is find out if that is the case with the colleges to which you have applied.

You all have given me a much needed reality check and for that I thank all of you. Yes, I was slacking off but I have 2 more exams in micro lecture and lab and 3 more in A&P lecture and lab as well. I am getting it together and wising up because I will imminently be going for higher levels of education in nursing. I know if I push I can do excellent on these next exams and come out in the green. Thanks again for the motivation and thanks for motivating others like me who will surely be reading these posts!

I honestly have had the same mentality, since I already got accepted for next semester. I'm taking 18 credits right now. 2 of them are sciences & I still need at least a C or above or they will not let me start the program in jan. Right now, I have a B in stats, an A in chem, a B in both A&P II lab & lecture, an A in Spanish & a C in African American culture. I feel like chem will go down since organic chem is kicking my ass, but I still want to try my hardest at getting all As and Bs, so I can get as many scholarships as possible
