4.0 Student...Didn't get in

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm pretty sad. I have worked my butt off. I have two young boys, I work as a CNA and I have a 4.0 GPA. I did well on my entrance exam. The program I applied to is competitive but not extremely competitive. I felt like the interview went ok except for with one of the interviewers. I have a soft voice, blond hair and big (natural) boobs. They didn't have my GPA or test scores during the interview and I felt like she just thought I was a bit of a bimbo. Ug... I have been working towards a minor in business and because of that I could get a degree in business administration a semester sooner at this point, that's IF I were able to get in to the BSN program next semester. This is the only affordable BSN program in my area. I just kind of feel bla at this point. I'm just venting to some people who understand the stress and the ones that understand the disappointment.

Hi,

I am so sorry you did not get in. I am sure you did your absolute best to keep the grades up, and nail that interview. However, things happen. Just because they did not accept you does not mean you are any less smarter than those applicants that got in. I am sure you can try next year. Btw, did they place you on a waitlist? Who knows, maybe someone will decide to drop out. In any event, at this point you should move on and think what your next step is, rather than thinking about the reasons you might have been rejected.

I'd contact the school and find out the actual reason you didn't get it. I have a hard time believing that it's because you're a blonde with a large chest. There could be a perfectly valid reason you weren't invited this cycle.

I once read that a highly competitive program turned away not a few, but many students with 4.0 GPAs. I would just keep trying or expand your horizons to other programs to apply to. And yes, you should talk to them to find out the reason, and if there is anything you can do to better your future chances. Good luck.

This could be the reason why you didn't land the spot. Imagine if this was an interview for a job and you didn't bring a copy of a resume. That's a major ding right then and there. The way I see it, it's the interview that did not land you the spot. 4.0 is the highest and you have CNA background experience. The only thing that's left is the interview. But yes, call them and ask why you didn't get in.

Ehhh.

To be fair, the ABSN program I am applying to specifically states that you should NOT bring anything to the interview aside from yourself. I wouldn't immediately assume her not having a copy of her grades with her is a reason she was DQ'ed.

This makes me so worried to apply to a program...

Don't let it. I got into a program with a great reputation with a 3.2 gpa and no health care experience. I did great on the HESI which saved me. It just all depends on the program.

OP I'm sorry! I would ask if there is a way to figure out why you did not get accepted. It could just be there was many candidates with a 4.0 (although I find that hard to believe unless we are talking about one class here, I don't know anyone in my cohort who got a 4.0 in A&P, Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, etc). I also doubt it was your "Looks", and would GUESS it was more the interview did not go well.

Not buying it. Entrance to nursing programs is very competitive. Yes, you had a 4.0. Yes, you have CNA experience. But what else did you bring? What is it that others could have brought that you didn't? How are your interview scores? It's not all about the GPA. And there is no way I believe it's about looks.

I spoke with another student, who is in the program, and she is under the impression that the interview is the deciding factor. So basically grades and work experience get you to the interview and then they base the decision from the interview alone. I know a lot of you think looks don't matter, but I have been stereotyped more than once. I'm not exceptionally pretty or anything, I just have this way about me. People either assume I am very innocent and naive or kinda ditzy. Interviewers do let their impressions have a base on their decisions. That is why more and more companies are depending on computer programs to narrow down candidates, so those impressions don't have as much pull. The program I applied to had an average GPA of 3.6 in it's pool of accepted applicants last semester. Either way, when I apply again next semester my hair will be dyed dark and I will of worked on a more assertive interview voice. That's if I don't decide to go for Business Administration.

It seemed when I was interviewing for my program they accepted the applicants who had answers that were outside the norm; Make sure your responses have substance and uniqueness to them beyond just sounding assertive.

No one said that looks don't matter. I'm small, blonde and I'm a 34DDD. I know exactly what it's like to be stereotyped. It's just never my first assumption that that's the reason things didn't go the way I hoped. I'd explore other, more concrete (and probable) reasons for my lack of an offer. I think assuming it's your looks is a scapegoat. JMO, of course.
