My middle daughter (who just had her 14th birthday) was born at 26 weeks so she spent quite a bit of time in the incubator when she was in the NICU. The hospital she was in stored the unused incubators in an alcove that we walked by on our way to the elevators. We were walking by these incubators one day, and my oldest daughter, who was 3.5 years old at the time, said to me "Look at all those extra baby traps, Mom!!!"

Conversation with a 7 year old today: (His cousin is talking about Santa coming tomorrow night)
Pt: "Santa isn't even real. They just send the presents."
    Me: "Who told you that?"
Pt: "I just know... he died a couple weeks ago." He said this very matter-of-factly. Now he has older siblings so I think it's totally possible that someone told him that Santa wasn't real but last week he was asking me if Santa just threw the presents down the chimney... Oh, kids.

I have another holiday related one. Last week, on Xmas Eve, I'm having a conversation with a 5 yr old. She tells me that Rudolph will get a carrot but all the other reindeer will get prunes. When I asked her if that was because the other ones are mean, she goes "Yeah, they used to laugh and call him names."

My pt. is nonverbal, so I don't have anything to add, but what a great thread! *LIKE* to all of the comments.

OTOH, my now 6 year old DD used to say, "for Pete's steak,!" "tummy button" and "heart beep."

I was taking one of my pediatric patients to her car to discharge. When she got in, she saw a penny sitting on the seat. She picked up the penny and handed it to me...and in the sweetest voice said. "Here you you can by ANYTHING you want!" Then she gave me a huge hug. I love my ped patients!

Today I had a kid (6 yrs old) tell me to hurry up with getting her shot ready because she "needed to go back to watching Full House."

I know this is an old thread, but I had to add something funny I aw from one of our patients. She drew a picture of a horse for the nurses (currently on display at our nurses station), and after signing her name, she added in parenthesis "The appendix victim". So funny!

I had to change a dressing on a little not too long ago. She was adorable. She so told me that because of my dressing change, that she would "never be able to trust anyone ever again." Drama! 😄 she did trust me enough to follow me to the treasure box afterward.....

    hahahahahaha!! i love that!

I am not a pedi nurse, but I will share one of my favorite stories about my dd. One night, out of the blue, she told me she didn't believe in the tooth fairy anymore. "Oh really?" I said. "Who do you think swaps your tooth for money, then?"

She thought for a moment, then replied, " I don't know. Probably just a normal fairy."

Nearly every post I've made on this thread has been about the same kid. The other day when I was there, she told me she was going to ask me "some really hard math questions." She then proceeded to ask me "what's 5 + 4?" And when I answered "9", her eyes grew wide and she exclaimed "HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT?!?!?!"

I told another kid last week (7 yrs old) that I'd watched her favorite movie on my plane ride home a couple weeks ago. She said "what's my favorite movie?" "Frozen", I said, since she talked about it all the time and had dressed up as Elsa for her birthday earlier this year. She then told me that Frozen is no longer her favorite movie because it's "so last year."
