so many nurses i know call it "the baby factory". facebook statuses galore "busy night at the baby factory" or "going to work at the baby factory tonight", etc. i just cringe when i hear that phrase...it sounds so generic, so much like the patients are just chugging through, not that they are individual women having individual babies and individual needs.....

totally silly, but i suppose i cant be the only one! and if i am, well, oh well :) we can't all be the same!

I can see where you are coming from. Childbirth is such a momentous occasion. I have never said that in my life. I sort of blink when I hear stuff like that but I don't let it get me upset.

Unless a nurse who uses the phrase is known for treating her patients with disrespect, I wouldn't bat an eye over this phrase. Some people refer to L&D as the cabbage patch or the stork patrol, harkening back to the days when children weren't supposed to know how babies got here. It's just one more way of saying, "another day at the office."

If it helps, think of the factory as a place where every "product" is specially designed and made to order. :D

See, I would have thought that a Mattress Salesperson would consider their jobsite a "baby factory", since that's where the actual "product creation" takes place!!! :D

It's totally incorrect. Combining the raw materials and the manufacturing of babies typically occurs long before L&D plays a role in the process.

Specializes in dialysis (mostly) some L&D, Rehab/LTC.

Is it not still the baby factory...oh wait...that is a new reality show starting on your local channel:smokin:

Nursing can be such a hard job sometimes.... have to find a way to inject a bit of levity into a stressful career!

Huh, I've never heard it called that before!

Once in a while we get a visitor who will say "So, how is the babymaking going?" and the RNs will always say "Oh, we aren't involved with that! We just deal with the end product."

I reserve that phrase for the few hospitals where they do thousands and thousands of deliveries a year and pretty much roll women through an assembly line-style of birth.

Never heard it called that. But at high intervention hospitals I would be tempted to call it that too...:crying2:
