so many nurses i know call it "the baby factory". facebook statuses galore "busy night at the baby factory" or "going to work at the baby factory tonight", etc. i just cringe when i hear that phrase...it sounds so generic, so much like the patients are just chugging through, not that they are individual women having individual babies and individual needs.....
totally silly, but i suppose i cant be the only one! and if i am, well, oh well :) we can't all be the same!
I went from a hospital that did around 3,000 deliveries/yr to one that does around 8,000/yr and I can see how one would be tempted to call such a hospital a "baby factory". However, I would like to say that my bedside nursing care has not changed and I am still able to treat each woman's birth as special and unique!

i called it the baby factory when i worked many years for a hospital that had over 7000 births a year, and we were required to "get 'em in and get 'em out" as quickly as possible, i.e. assembly-line birthing. it was my sardonic way of expressing my frustration and sadness at how i was not practising the way i wanted to.
