my feet are killing me!

  1. I am a nursing student and I just started precepting. I am doing 12 hour shifts and my feet are killing me! (Even though the time goes by fast.) I just wanted some different opinions on the different shifts out there.....

Some nurses swear by New Balance shoes. I love my Beirgenstocks.

Get 2 pair NEVER ever wear the same pair two days straight. Your shoes need time to recover too. They last longer this way as well.

Check with a podiatrist. You may have flat feet, plantar faciatis, or even high arches. Any of these can cause foot problems.

    Absolutely get a good shoe.

It might not be or just be your feet that are the problem. Try some graduated support or compression hose.

Put your feet up on breaks.

Masague those tired puppies. My daughter got me a contraption that is a series of wooden dowels that are knobby and rotate as I roll my feet over them. Hand massage your feet too. Or better yet get someone to do for you.

I think that the evening(4-12) is the best shift. I like to stay up late and I don't like to get up early. Some people might say this person is lazy but I say not so
I work as hard as the next person, I just do it at a different time of day.

Never go cheap on your shoes. I usually get NewBalance and Wife usually gets them on sale. Buying two pairs is a good idea since a nasty little spill or accident can happen when least expected.

There are several shift options, but you will have to ask your facility about theirs...different facilities have different shifts available. Whatever shift you work, you will have a period where your body will be adjusting. I returned to work in 11/03, after being out of the field for four years. Boy was my body (legs and feet especially, oh and back!) shocked! I am happy to say that I, and it, are back into the swing of thihgs, except for taking (occasionally) some ibuprofen for backaches midshift (I work 12 hours shifts, 7am to 7 pm) I hardly notice my feet aching. However, I do notice releif when I take my shoes off as soon as I get in my car.

As far as shoes goes...I am wearing Dansko's right now, but have worn Birkenstock's before. I love my Birky's. I am ambivilant about my Dansko's though. I am shoping for some Birckenstocks within the next month or so.

First get some Nike AIRLINERS. They are like walking on pillows and even during 12's my feet never felt tired. Plus, buy some Johnson's foot soap and soak you feet for 30 mins a day in hot water with the Johnson't foot soap in it. It totally relaxes and revives your feet. Hope you find relief.

New Balance shoes + my custom orthotics make it possible to get through my 3-11 shift with ease, no matter how busy I am or how much running I have to do. I have flat feet, and the orthotics are worth every penny of the $500 they cost: not only do my feet not hurt anymore, neither do my ankles, my knees, my hips, or my lower back. (I can only imagine how much better off I'll be once I've lost another hundred pounds or so......)

I have a pair of slip on Rockers, they are very comfy, I've been known to wear them on my days off when I'm just running errands. I also recently got a pair of KSWISS, so far i like them too and my mom LOVES hers! I work 3rdshift (10-6) I really like it cause i still have the evenings to spend time with my fiancee and i also like going to bed late and sleeping in.
