Mayo Clinic interview

I am an upcoming BSN graduate (I graduate this Saturday) and I have an upcoming interview with the Mayo Clinic!

Here is my situation: I am from California, where the pay is great ($90,000/year is average where I'm from) and many nurses have suggested not to leave. However, this is THE MAYO CLINIC. I don't think anywhere could offer to type of experience that it could, no matter the pay difference. I am trying to make a game plan if I am offered a position there.

Thoughts?

If you do not have anything holding you in California I would say this is a no-brainer. This will make your career, it is one of the few hospitals that is known throughout the country.

Having just moved to Minnesota myself (originally from San Diego) I have been pleasantly surprised. I find the quality of life is much higher, housing much more affordable, and the education (if you have or want kids) is so far ahead it is not even comparable.

The public school education is better than most of the private education in California.

Also the average time to get a job after graduation from nursing school in CA is more than a year, when last I looked. If you have had enough gumption to land an interview at Mayo, pack your warm clothes and get there stat! Good luck!

I did accept the job there and I begin in March!

I am looking at housing options. Any advice there?

The Mayo Clinic is not special. During my travel assignment, I realized most employees felt stifled by their ridiculous "rules" and did not like working there. I also saw the same kind of medical mistakes I saw throughout my career. They paid less than the going rate, because they were "THE MAYO".

As far as having stars in your eyes, I agree with BeenThereDoneThat that the Mayo Clinic may leave you disallusioned if you are not realistic. This is true for ANY hospital system -- and really, nursing in general. Im not saying Mayo isn't special -- it is. Just stay grounded knowing you've chosen a very rewarding but challenging profession.

I love the enthusiasm and courage you are showing. This will be a big move. Yes, there will be tough days ahead (as there is in any big new life change) -- but now is the time to celebrate and be excited!! Way to go!!!

I interviewed at and was offered a position at Mayo when I first graduated, they flew me out and reimbursed expenses, where willing to pay quite alot for relocation expenses, and the starting pay was similar to what I'd make in New England, and it was in a speciality I wanted. The rents in the area seemed to be quite affordable. I didn't take the position for family reasons and have kicked myself in the butt ever since.
