What NOT to say during an interview

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I interviewed an RN for a full time position this morning. The interview was going well, and she seemed to be giving me some really good answers. At the end of the interview, I asked if there was anything more she wanted to say. She then proceeded to tell me that I should really pay more attention to my weight, since being overweight puts me at risk for diabetes and cardiac problems, especially at my age. OK, so I am 25 pounds overweight, and around 50, and I know the risks, but do you really tell a potential manager that she is old and fat? Needless to say, I will not be offering her a position.

Even if she wasn't interviewing that's just plane rude to say to anyone. Add onto it the fact that she said that to you a total stranger makes me think what would she say to a patient 50 or 100 lbs overweight. On the flip side if I was a patient and a nurse said that to me, I would be guarded and nervous around her. Some of us don't take critisism well

as funny as that situation is, it just goes to remind me that not all people are equipped with the single, most important tool: COMMON SENSE

it really shouldn't be hard to remember that you should shut your trap if you've got nothing nice to say, and it shouldn't depend on who you're talking to, either!

I like TeacherSue's attitude. She was able to see the humor in the situation! I'll bet she would be a cool person to work with and for!

For real???? Wow!!!! Maybe she was trying to show you what a good patient educator she could be???

Perhaps she decided she could not handle the job and had no cojones to say so. Easy way out to avoid being hired.

Reminds me of having folks stop by to ask for work, no appointment, no resume, and then ask you to sign a paper so they could continue to get unemployment.

I guess I have a difficult time thinking anyone who made it and passed all the testing never got any communications. You don't need interview skills not to put your foot in your mouth so far that you tickle your stomach from the inside.

okay... now that i had a moment to composed myself... i recall many moons ago on one of my first interviews i said to the recruiter which had several photos of his family on the wall behind him... "sir, you have a lovely daughter" and he responded "that lovely daughter is my wife" ..... oooops:eek:....needless to say i never got a call back.

Yep, don't hire her she obviously has very poor judgement. Who knows what might pop out of her mouth when talking to patients and coworkers. How could anyone think that would be ok to say? How did you respond? I would have had a hard time not addressing that immediately.

This was the first thing I thought of when I read the post. I could only imagine the problems caused by this person saying inappropriate things to patients.

Umm, really? Does she lack a brain?

i've had a few of those oops moments. i started to ask "who do you have with you, today, sir/madam.", instead of assuming.

All I have to say is WOW. Just wow.
