Things interviewees have said...

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Well, since I am interviewing soon, I am curious...for managers surfing this site, if you are able to disclose, what things have interviewers said that have made you think, "Next, please." I've read about dress code blunders, but any way to share other faux pas?

"This is my mother, she wants to sit in on my interview"

Ha! I can top that one.

Just after graduating college, a new nurse I knew told me that she had an interview, and if they offered her job, she might take it but the job would have to agree to let her have 2 weeks off tbd because she was planning to have her dog bred again and she needed to be present for the delivery...

I've had many people tell me that they had no intention of working in my specialty for any length of time. They were looking at my job as just a stepping stone to something else that they really want to do.

"Next!"

"Next!"

Really? I couldn't imagine saying that. "I'm interviewing for this unit, but I have NO intention of staying here that long."

"Next" is right.

I had an interviewing nurse burst into tears and say that she hated her current job so much she didn't know what she would do if she didn't get the job on my unit.

My observations from multiple interviews... Dress appropriately, don't ask about salary, and practice talking about your strengths without sounding too overconfident. Good luck!

Yikes. I'm guessing she didn't get the job. ;)

In an interview we showed the interviewee a drug chart with some errors on. One was benzopenicillin IV when there was an allergy to penicillin causing anaphylaxis.

The question was what drugs would you give at 6 am? One person answered the benzopen because the doctor ordered it. When questioned she said well the doctor obviously wants it so I would give it.

Uhh no!

I recently had an interview or grilling by my potential peers and when asked if I thought I could do the job because it was very demanding, my answer was

"well if you can all do it, so can I"

I kinda think that maybe was not the best answer to give :-(

"I can't work Thursdays because I have crew practice. Wednesdays I have my counseling appointment, and I can't work Mondays or Fridays, either. I won't work nights or weekends because I have a LIFE."

This one was my step-daughter, interviewing for a job at Starbuck's. Her mother thought she aced the interview.

LOL! She sounds like the perfect candidate to me. ;)
