I don't know if this has been posted before, but what grosses you out as a nurse?

For me it's blood clots. Especially from a delivery with a large EBL. The blood sits in the placenta pan and congeals. Bleh. Shudder.

I have had a patient that had an above knee amputation, was septic in ICU. The distal end of his femur protruded through his stump. It was one of the most disgusting wounds that I have seen. Another was a patient, in same ICU, that had a decub on her bottom that had a tunnel. That tunnel had an opening the size of a pencil eraser that bubbled with pus. But the time that I passed out was when I was pregnant with my third child and was performing wound care on an extremely obese female patient. She had wounds beneath her pannus, and you could see into her abd. I had lifted the pannus with one hand and saw the wounds and fainted. Had been working as a LPN for over 15 years at that time, and nothing every caused me to be so nauseated. :o

Trach sputum. GI bleed poop. Pregestimil poop. Chunks of ear wax.

Beyond that, I can handle a good bit.

Befor my mother died one night I came down and found that my mother a" long retired nurse with little filling in her hands" had cut out part of a wound in her hand tell she had fully cut out the tendent . She looked at me and said watch this she moved her hand and tendent came flying out there was blood and skin every where I allmost passed out .

Where to begin....mucus disgusts me, poop, nasty wounds or skin lesions! Yuck!:uhoh21:

Nasal suctioning. I can handle trach suctioning and suctioning the mouth. But there's something about nasal suctioning that I cannot handle.:crying2:

I think the worst thing that grossed me out was just as we were hoisting up an elderly lady with a electric lifter, I undid he panties and she farted whilst pooing right about 30cm from my face!

It was also my first day of nursing EVER, as a student! :)

I wasn't that freaked out, and I was respectful and made the patient comfortable by telling her not to worry :)

Overall I can handle absolutely everything you can throw at me, after having pieces of a friends skull and brain in my hands as he died in my hands I am not disgusted by anything in the clinical setting :)

One thing that might gross me out is a childbirth that is yucky, the only one I have observed was very smooth and the baby wasn't covered in much gunk so to speak :)

Mucus of any kind gets to me. I hate dealing with it! X_X

I was bathing a woman who was on palliative care. As I was washing around her mouth, I noticed this brown, bumpy piece of SOMETHING hanging from her lip. I had to peel it off, and when I was examining it in my hand, I figured out that it was...

A DEAD PIECE OF HER TONGUE!!

It must have been the top layer of it, or something. It was brown, and I could see the little tastebud impressions...eeehhhhhhh!!! I have never been so heeby-jeebied in my life.

Specializes in tele, oncology.

Maggots in wounds gross me out. I do wish we would use the medical grade ones when the wound is bad enough, those at least are contained and there on purpose. When the pt comes in with maggots though that is just yuck. (It's only happened a handful of times thankfully.)

It takes a lot to gross me out...I'm one of the ones that don't mind suctioning of any kind or awful wounds (sans maggots of course :) ).

LPs make me woozy though...seeing the fluid go up that tube when they get samples makes me almost pass out. Thankfully I only have to see one every once in a while.

I'm not really grossed out by anything aside from some smells that make me hunch over and almost lose it.

I DREADED the days I worked as a CNA and the residents had sauerkraut or cabbage in their meal. Oh Lord. I just about lost it thinking about it. It smells horrible going in, even worse coming back out.
