Anyone working two nursing jobs?

Nurses Job Hunt

Updated:   Published

I have always been a work-a-holic and I am planning on attempting to acquire two nursing positions, either both at one hospital or one at each of the two hospitals in our area. Both hospitals work 12 hour shifts with 3 days on-four days off, so I would be working 6 days with one off. It would only take one year of such labor to pay off all of our bills and after a second year our bank account will be flush and I can make a good start on a retirement account.

Anybody else here working two jobs or planning to?

I work two Nursing Jobs one full time and one prn

Hey, not fair. I don't have one job :(

I know lots of nurses who work 2 jobs...either 2 part-time or one full- time + one part-time. As others have suggested 2 full time jobs is very likely to be unmanageable. Even if your employers allow you to do this you will probably have schedule conflicts. If you want to work as many hours as possible then I would suggest going with a full-time +part-time combo. You can always volunteer for OT at the full-time gig. Time and half pay is a better deal anyway.

apply for all and any job even if you don't like that area off nursing. Just get your foot in the door

You have to understand that I am a former truck driver who worked 12+ hours a day, 70+ hours a week for weeks at a time for 20 years. I may change my mind later, but this kind of schedule doesn't bother me too much.

But--as you will soon come to see--truck driving and nursing are two whole different ball games. It's not going to be as easy as you think. You can always try it out and if it doesn't work quit one of the jobs or scale back your hours.

Best of luck whatever happens.

I have a friend who worked 2 full time hospital jobs for a couple years. She made it work. The only reason she let one job go is because her body couldn't handle it when she got pregnant. With that being said, working at 2 different hospitals is possible. Her baby is now one and she's been back to working 2 full time jobs for about 8 months now. Good luck with that!

I know this is 3 year late but...

I currently work full time as a PHN. My role is mainly to work as a nurse consultant and coordinator. Love my job! 7-5, weekends off, every other Friday off. Very flexible...come in late, leave late.

So I got a job offer as a part time psych RN three nights a week night shift 11p- 7a. The nurse manager told me, it would be mostly chart auditing and the majority of the patients would be sleeping, if someone needs meds/attention, I would obviously follow protocol/MD orders. I flat out told her I have no psych RN experience , she said its fine and they train new grads often and I would get a 10 day orientation.

So, my question is what does it mean to audit charts and does it seem like a good deal?

Where I work, auditing charts just means you make sure all required forms are in the chart and filled out correctly by the RN staff. Sounds like a pretty chill job to me. I work in psych at night quite often and the patients are usually asleep and the unit is quiet.

Thanks for all your responses. I would be working 3 nights between Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon. I was offered $31/hr +$1 diff nights and +$5 diff weekends. :)

Hi! I also wanted some input on picking up a part time or PRN job. I work full time in a Peds Primary Care office. I work Monday and Tuesday 8am to 8pm and Wednesday and Thursday 8 to 5pm. I would like to pick up a few shifts on Friday, Saturday or Sunday in a new Skilled Nursing Facility near my house. The commute would be about 5 minutes. I just want to ask how I could swing this or what to discuss a at the interview (if I get a call back). I have LTC/Skilled nursing experience.

Thanks for the information!

Do you think you can manage constantly switching between night and day shift, and coming to work in the day exhausted from staying up all night then working another 9-10 hours?

I use to work 70 plus hours in my prior job as well. However I find nursing is.a diffrent type of stress and drain on the body. I do pull lots of overtime at my current job getting 52- 55 hrs per week, it adds up to an extra $1000 biweekly which is enough. I vary it by working different floors where they are short. It's possible with I fulltime and 1 prn, I dont see how 2 fulltime jobs are feasible at least not both in hospital environment. I'd consider one hospital and other at home health or nursing facility. That much hospital will drain you.
