Nursing in Australia

How to work in Australia as a nurse? Im a registered nurse here in the philippine and currently working as a trainor in a caregiver school. Because its really diffucult to get a hospital experience here in our country. The caregiver school that I'm working with currently partnered with Metropolitan South Institute of Tafe.

Do australia only allow student working visa? It's too expensive to study in a foregin country. MSIT also offers diploma in nursing which cost $18,000. when converted to philippine peso, it would cost 700,000 Php. I have to pay other things like airfare, house, trnaspo, food..

What can you recommend for foreigh nurses like me? I've heard that Australia is much better that US. And with the retrogression still ongoing, i have to wait 5 or more years.

You will have to pass the IELTS with almost a perfect score and you will be required to complete a bridge program since working as an instructor is not counted as hospital experience when applying for licensure and visas in Australia.

It is still not going to be something that can be done immediately for you, as you will need to cover your expenses for the 6 month program, if you get accepted to one.

Please take the time to do some reading on this forum as there has been much discussed about it.

ms. Suzanne,

I also had a question concerning this topic.

I don't know where should I start.

I'm just a newly grad here in the Philippines. I plan of working in Australia (specially Sydney because my Aunt and her family are there). Um... can I first work as a volunteer nurse in Australia and had my training there (Is there a school who would train nurses from foreign country?) Also, how much is the training? Thank you very much.

I doubt you can work even as a volunteer in Australia without being assessed by the state nursing board. There is many threads on Australia and the bridging program will more than likely have to complete and last time I saw some figures on this course was approx Aust $7,000

the tuition for the bridging course for sydney is AU $10,000 already. As of June 2008

thank you very much for the replies. :)

Um..there's really no way to work as a nurse in Australia if you don't have professional experience? :(

apple, there's no way you could work in australia without first, registering in their nursing council, then you will have to be evaluated if you qualify, then they will recommend you to enroll for the bridging program which costs AUD12000 (as of April 2008, depending on the University). Student visa costs: Php18++ thousand, initial registration is around AUD200++.

as for work experience, that will be evaluated by the nursing council.

ok here is a cheaper bridging program--- Au$850 per module X 4 modules =

Au$ 3,400 --- plus the modules can be done online--thru distant learning. Also, this state allows you to challenge their practice standards by admitting yourself to their challenge exam.if you pass it, no more bridging program--you get your registration ryt away. (challenge exam? it is based on Primary nursing skills and also their state laws and ethical, professional standards).

Just PM for more info or need my help regarding this

--By the way, IELTS can be taken after assessments have been done--so you dont have to take the IELTS right away.

English language competence

The following English language tests and results are accepted by

Council. However, it is suggested that you do not undertake an

English language test until your application has been assessed

by Council and you have been advised of the requirements for

eligibility. If you have already undertaken an English language

test Council only accepts English language test results from the

test provider.

Occupational English Test - minimum requirement is a B

level pass in all components.

IELTS - minimum score of 6.5 in Reading and Listening and

a score of at least seven (7) in Writing and Speaking with an

overall band score of seven (7) or greater.

They require that you have a local license, they will not even consider you if you have not taken and passed the NLE.
