Prevalence of Christians in the field of nursing

Nurses Spirituality

I will be making a career change, from the banking industry to nursing. Thought about it over the past year. In my industry, Christians are far and few between. I suppose much of this has to do with the main focus being, money.

Wondering about the prevalence of Christians in the nursing field? I know much of this has to do with what area of the country one works. Also, non-Chrisitans may not be looking out for Christians in the workforce. I know in my industry, I feel alone, to say the least.

I'm a Christian but I have to say that conversations like these leave me feeling a bit unsettled. I want to ask, "Why does it matter?"

Are the "Christian" nurses (or those who self identify in that fashion in any case) somehow "better" or? I'm just wondering what the implications are of the OP's question.

In short, I see no reason for my belief system to be the focus at my employment. At work, I focus on the job at hand.

Part of it could be the unconscious associations we make with certain occupations. People who work in the financial services industry have suffered as a result of some very well publicized news stories involving unscrupulous individuals at the top of the heap. I do believe many decent people have been tarred by it. That was certainly true in the case of Ken Lay and Enron. I'll bet if you asked his close acquaintances at the time, before the whole scandal broke if Ken Lay was "a good Christian" they would've said yes. So he didn't just lie and cause people to lose their life savings, he stole their good reputation, too.

That would indeed be an interesting study! It's interesting, but one could search day and night, without any success of finding any journal of this sort in my industry (banking industry).....

Journal of Christian Nursing

A quick Google search will find a deep connection between Christianity and Nursing. An almost non-existant relationship between Christianity and Banking. Which is probably why the banking industry has been plagued by unethical practices for years.

I just want to point out as an atheist just how offensive that last line is. I don't think you meant to offend anyone, but phrases like this are commonly used. I have met many Christian nurses that I would love to have take care of me. But I have met many that I wouldn't also. Ethics is completely independent of religion.

How does money make one assume a field is any "less Christian" than another?

Let's not get into Churches who misuse that same "money" that's donated to them.

Anyhow, I can say that most people in my workplace couldn't care less what religion the other is. Although I haven't come across many religious nurses, if and when I do, I respect them just the same. As an atheist, I may not agree with their opinions, but we are all professionals and should act as such. I've never had any problems and religion isn't something that comes up much where I work.

Mind you, I'm in Canada. I'm sure this isn't the case in some southern American states.

"You don’t need religion to have morals. If you can’t determine right from wrong, then you lack empathy, not religion."

Why do Christians always think everything started with them? The arrogance and/or ignorance is astounding. "The nursing profession" does not have its roots in Judaeo-Christian traditions butterfly, "nursing" or people who have acted as "nurses" has been around in every culture, every tribe and every corner of the globe since the beginning of time. Believe it or not, life did go on before the time of Christian religion.

Silly. Don't you know that before christianity, there were no nurses? What, do you think all cultures develop a group of people to care for the sick and infirm or something? How absurd!

And before the ten commandments, everyone thought it was okay to kill and steal.

And it's inherent morality is why rich nations who identify so strongly as practicing Christians (the united states) give so much foreign aide per capita, while strongly secular/atheist nations (Sweden) give so little per capita.

Your beliefs are irrelevant.

We would need a working definition of "Christian" before we could do any studies. I work with and know many wonderful people, and I do not know the spiritual belief of many of them....why should that be the "bottom line?"

Don't worry sister, you have fellow believers around you where ever you go. Don't mind the cold comments on here by the mass of empty non-believers--I always am entertained by people who claim to be athiests or non-Christitans coming onto Christian threads or Christian websites (like the Christian Post) and spewing their hate and intolerance of Christians (they can only judge Christianity by its abuse). But, that's a price for living in this broken world, I guess. The best thing is just to remain steadfast in faith and be filled with the Spirit so to be an example with the fruit in your life. Hopefully, because of your light, people will come to Christ. Continue the faith and God bless!

I hope my reply didn't come off as "cold." And yes, some folks are just jerks, and hurt their own argument by their lack of tact in presenting their views. I guess I am just urging caution in supposing that someone is "Christian" just because they say they are, or just because they "act right." In my experience and studying extensively the "varieties" of American Christians from differing denoms, and the reality that, regardless of dogma, or "laws" within the denoms, many folks are "Christian" by the grace of God, even if we don't like the way they act. So by contrast, there are many wonderful folks who are non believers. There are many non believers that "act" better than myself, and live very self controlled lives, and are no more saved than the devil. It only happens by God imparting grace through the work of Christ on the cross, or stated another way, by The Imputed Righteousness of Christ, and undeservedly so.

I do hope you find fellow Believers of your variety to edify each other, and I understand where you are coming from.

Saying non-believers are empty - now that is cold.
