  1. Hi OP. I'm not a nurse, but a student myself. I just wanted to let you know that I for one appreciate the experienced nurses telling it like it is. I mean, do you really want to only hear about the positive points of your career/future career? I would hate to spend x amt of years studying at a university to pass my NCLEX, thinking that everything from there on down is going to be fantastic and then get unexpectedly hit with the harsh reality that "NO!" my co workers don't care whether I succeed or not (in fact it seems as many of them kind of don't want you to, looking for any and all reasons to talk about the new RN's incompetance). Or "NO!" management couldn't care less that I'm so busy following ridiculous HIPAA regs, and filling out endless paperwork for legal reasons that I don't actually have time to properly care for my pts. I appreciate the heads up, personally.

Also, Orion81, Ruas61 never said s/he hated new grads. Nor did s/he anything negative toward them. S/he just said that they do not affect his/her posts. Relax, man

  2. It would be interesting to see a thread about what newer nurses believe/feel/expect that experienced nurses should be to them. I am not interesting in opening that can of worms tonight.

  3. I admit I worded the question a bit oddly, but yeah I agree with you man.

  6. Boy, oh, boy...troll season in full force. Got news for you, guys...no one here owes you ANYTHING. Not a blessed thing. We don't know you. You don't know us. That's the beauty of the site.

And to answer the OP...I would not go back to bedside nursing if you put a gun to my head. I'd get fired or killed. I just don't do well with forced cheerfulness in the face of aerosolized feces. If someone gets in my face in my clinic, I have the ability to show them the door, AND tell them what I think of them. Wouldn't fly in hospital. I do love my job.

My pet peeve? Newbies and students with a holier than thou attitude coming along and lambasting us for being human. I'm with the poster who suggested starting your own site, more to your liking. Then maybe we won't offend you.

Now, back to my TV show...
  7. I don't think the answer is that simple. But wouldn't it be nice...........

RUAS implied that all new grads think we are the "epicenter" of everything. Yet another of dozens and dozens on this site of someone trying to make a new grad feel so small. And you're right, I'm going to relax because I am 100% done with this website. That comment was the last straw. Come back when you graduate yourself and post questions as a new grad. Just wait. You're going to have so many rude, mean comments. Until you graduate and work your butt off for ungrateful patients and next to backstabbing, gossiping immature nurses, you won't GET IT. Goodbye ALLNURSES, after 4 years, this is my last post.
  9. I do love being a nurse. Yes, we gripe about our pts and coworkers and management and doctors, but people in any job gripe. There are some negative nellies here but most of us love our job.

People on here need to realize that when you complain on here (and for some that all those individuals do) it really dissuades us new grads from continuing into the profession. First and most obvious question, Does anyone actually like being a Nurse? I mean granted I don't think anyone loves all aspects of their job, but does it seem like a nightmare every day? Secondly, name the best part of your area and your biggest pet peeve.

    Sorry had to rant.

First of all, sometimes the vents and the rants get to be too much for me too. When that happens, I either take a break from AN for a while or just avoid those threads.

What you need to realize, is that this site is not just for prospective nursing students and nursing students. It's also for nurses, and we get frustrated and need a place to vent and complain and get things off our chest, a place where other folks understand what we're going through. I can talk to my coworkers, and I can talk to my husband to some extent (he's a paramedic so gets some things but not others). But sometimes, I need wider perspectives than my coworkers (or I need to vent ABOUT them), or have exhausted their listening stamina, or just need further validation. Whle I do post things to help out students (as others do), I also post things for myself and really have no responsibility to be encouraging of new grads 100% of my waking hours.

To answer your questions, yes, I love being a nurse. It does not seem like a nightmare every day, although I'm currently working a job that is pretty darn close to daily nightmare material (but I'm working on my exit strategy). I work peds ED and adult ED and the peds part is my favorite part of the job- kids a fun and there really is so much joy in pediatrics. My biggest pet peeve are the folks who should not be in the ER but come here anyway who inevitably are the most impatient, entitled, and demanding ptients. Piecemeal ordering is right up there too tho (Meds ordered, I go administer, come out to chart, additional meds ordered, give new meds, now there's a nasal swab ordered, etc).
