I feel like they should change the title of this site to "reasons why my job sucks"

People on here need to realize that when you complain on here (and for some that all those individuals do) it really dissuades us new grads from continuing into the profession. First and most obvious question, Does anyone actually like being a Nurse? I mean granted I don't think anyone loves all aspects of their job, but does it seem like a nightmare every day? Secondly, name the best part of your area and your biggest pet peeve.

Oh, by the way, most people post here without regard to new grads because they are not the epicenter of our existence or jobs or topics .
How unbelievably, offensively rude. And you know what? I don't care what you think. When you became a nurse, you took on the role as teacher and role model for all nurses following you. THAT is the REALITY. Whether you like it or not, YOU are our teacher. You better hope to hell we new grads don't have nurses like you who we are trying to look up to when YOU are the patient in the hospital. I love learning from experienced nurses. Guess what? You better care how you are teaching us. WE are the future experienced nurses taking care of your kids. I never disrespected experienced nurses til I became a part if this website and saw how much we new grads are despised by so many of you. Its like "how dare anyone after us become a nurse and try to learn." Yeah, the NERVE of us.

I think this thread needs to be redirected. From what I am reading from the OP's post, I don't think they are trying to attack anyone or make assumptions. It was a simple observation that they made and decided to voice. So now they are wondering if people really do enjoy nursing or is it just another job? How about we just stick with that theme?

For I, as a nursing student, would like to know as well. :)

Wow, just wow. I only worked 2 months after graduating to realize that 90% of nursing sucks. I didn't need this website to tell me that. But time and time again I've come to this website and then walked away feeling so hopeless and depressed. The negativity on this website is overwhelming. I'm completely done with all of you. The majority of you are probably the same nurses working right next to me who help make my job a living hell. Consider me gone. In my nursing career, I'll just be the one keeping my head down and not listening and contributing to your gossip and griping at work. I'll grin and bear my extremely hard job, but not with you on this website who hate us new grads so much. I'll find an outlet elsewhere.

I think that much like anything nursing has it's ups and downs, and the whole health care industry is going through a down period. It's nasty out there- sorry to break it to you guys. It's not your nursing instructors jobs to tell you that being a nurse is more like being a waitress, a lackey, and a janitor than you'd want to realize, and not that it's our job either but that's how it is for health care workers. We're the puppets of the suits and ties and high heels- we do what they command, and they get a nice little something something to pad their fat little wallets. A patient's family member snaps their fingers and tells us to fetch them a cold drink, while we're en route to get someone their pain medicine and it's our job to tip our proverbial hats and say yes ma'am with a spring in our step. And then when we fetch them their cold drink and they "didn't ask for this much ice" then we simply smile and apologize as though we just severed their finger and fetch them another. Why? Because if we don't- we're out the door on our compassionate fannies because someone complained that we didn't fill the glass to exactly 46.34% full of ice...but you know, we'd be out the door anyways, because in the 15 minutes it took to fill a glass of water to a pleasing level, our patient with the 19/10 pain complained to the patient rep that it took 15 minutes too long for us to get their pain meds.

We may have gone to school to be nurses because we cared about people, we might have gone because we find the medical field fascinating, we might have gone because it's good money, but those points are all null and void now because it's not about that- it's about customer service, it's about PR, and it's about putting on a good act like we care about our patients, but we really care about corporate and making some more money for corporate. And meanwhile they're taking away our holiday pay, they're giving us $10 "gift cards" that actually came from our own blasted paychecks!! Nursing has gone from being a noble profession to a nasty, cat-fighting competitive industry that's all about the money, baby.

...my favorite part of my job is when babies roll their eyes at me...

Orion81, I replied recently to a question you had on ACLS. Don't stop asking questions here. I always answer questions for any one where I feel I can offer a reasonable answer. Many nurses on this forum are happy to help students/new grads. Ignore the negativity. There are positive people on this forum too.

Hi OP. I'm not a nurse, but a student myself. I just wanted to let you know that I for one appreciate the experienced nurses telling it like it is. I mean, do you really want to only hear about the positive points of your career/future career? I would hate to spend x amt of years studying at a university to pass my NCLEX, thinking that everything from there on down is going to be fantastic and then get unexpectedly hit with the harsh reality that "NO!" my co workers don't care whether I succeed or not (in fact it seems as many of them kind of don't want you to, looking for any and all reasons to talk about the new RN's incompetance). Or "NO!" management couldn't care less that I'm so busy following ridiculous HIPAA regs, and filling out endless paperwork for legal reasons that I don't actually have time to properly care for my pts. I appreciate the heads up, personally.

Also, Orion81, Ruas61 never said s/he hated new grads. Nor did s/he anything negative toward them. S/he just said that they do not affect his/her posts. Relax, man ;)

It would be interesting to see a thread about what newer nurses believe/feel/expect that experienced nurses should be to them. I am not interesting in opening that can of worms tonight.

Boy, oh, boy...troll season in full force. Got news for you, guys...no one here owes you ANYTHING. Not a blessed thing. We don't know you. You don't know us. That's the beauty of the site.

And to answer the OP...I would not go back to bedside nursing if you put a gun to my head. I'd get fired or killed. I just don't do well with forced cheerfulness in the face of aerosolized feces. If someone gets in my face in my clinic, I have the ability to show them the door, AND tell them what I think of them. Wouldn't fly in hospital. I do love my job.

My pet peeve? Newbies and students with a holier than thou attitude coming along and lambasting us for being human. I'm with the poster who suggested starting your own site, more to your liking. Then maybe we won't offend you.

Now, back to my TV show...
