I am curious how many of us have close family members (parent, grandparent especially) who are nurses, and whether or not this inspired you in your career choice.
I will answer for myself...my mom is a nurse, as was my great-grandmother and an aunt. I cannot say that this inspired me to go into nursing, however. My mom was in management by the time I was old enough to really understand what she did for a living, and I knew 100% that I did NOT want to follow in those footsteps! I was inspired to consider nursing as a second career after my husband was hospitalized and subsequently required surgery.
There are several cousins of mine that are nurses and my mom worked in a hospital and nursing home as a CNA, also a close childhood friend of mine was a nurse, though she discouraged me from doing it do the stress and having injured her back, she now works in insurance as a case manager and is much happier in that job than hospital nursing.
I will say she was right about the stress and risk of injury, these are legitimate downsides, but being a nurse has been helpful for my family with managing their health problems and hospital stays. Also I'm sure it's also helped me to stay proactive about my own health. Plus I have been blessed to care for many wonderful patients, including friends, neighbors, old class mates. It's surprising what a small world it is and who you will meet and care for as a nurse.
I have one cousin that is a RN. I also have another cousin that lies about being an LPN, RN and ultrasoud tech. Yes she actually makes a living as a professional lier.
I have an aunt who is a CMA and a scrub tech but identifies herself as a nurse. It kills me. Kills. I don't think she means to mislead, she just truly believes there's no difference.
How does she make a living off lying?Just curious. :)
7 and I am counting on one of them to get me a job!
I have 5 and no one was able to get me a job. I'm blessed that I was able to find employment based on my qualifications, personality, and Gods help alone. None of my nurse friends or family was able to help me get a job. Hope it is different for you.
My mom is a nurse. When she graduated high school she went to college with all intents and purposes of becoming an RN, but, she met my dad and quit school to get married (luckily for our family!). She patiently waited for my siblings and I to grow up and start/finish college before she went back to school. She graduated last year to become an ADN. :)
My mom is a nurse (ADN) as is my first cousin. My mom wanted me to be anything but an RN, so I chose
a first career in molecular biology research from a lifelong interest in science/health. Eventually, I wanted more contact with people, and a good work/life balance, so I chose nursing as a second career. She got behind the whole idea when I had landed a scholarship for my school, finally got onto the floor in clinicals, and could share all the quirky stories.
She is a floor nurse in maternity, and has an expectation I will at least get an MSN in my education. We'll see if that happens.

Not one nurse in my family (one either side) are nurses. Although I do have a few distant cousins who claim they are nurses (CNA's and a medical office assistant).
My oldest daughter keeps tossing the idea around of becoming a nurse (my checkbook shows this in terms of the different classes at college she's taken) and my little one dreams of being a pediatric neurosurgeon (she's in 5th grade). Other than that no nurses.
