MEN, dont come into nursing

Nurses Men

Published

I ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes. It sucks. Dont let people here convince you on how great it is. If you are going back to school dont hang onto the mentality of "nursing is a great career there where always be jobs" that was 10 years ago when that was true. do research, there are no nursing jobs. People from overseas come here by the boat and take jobs. The wage is on the down trend, there are more then enough nurses to replace those ready to retire. Please if you are just getting into college pick a less stressful, good paying career choice. PPLEASE research on forums and here from nurses who are not happy with their career. coorprate has destroyed nursing. Dont listen to the few on here who say nursing is so wonderful, i promise you when they run out of paxil and adivan, which is fueling there happiness, they will no longer be posting on these boards on the issues of how great their jobs are.

Capitalism is what makes potential in the US amazing! I may hate some of the ways our country is run, but I love it 100%!

Yes this is true. I have a bit if a love/hate relationship with America. Very capitalist. But he potential is amazing.

Dang. I'm glad I live in Michigan. We have a ton of nursing jobs. Shoot I work for an agency and I get a ton of hours because there are so many open jobs for nurses. Good thing I'm not moving to where all these "foreign" nurses are stealing our jobs...

? Ativan.. Even autocorrect can spell it.

In my personal experience men do get promoted/hired into management positions before women. My facility has 3 male nurses...2 of the 3 are the DON and the ADON.

Why so much disgust about men in nursing? You should try Ativan might help your mood j/k. I've been in nursing for over 5 1/2 years and love it. The variety, the opportunity for change is incredible. I initially earned an associates degree and went back to get my BSN and finally earned my MSN. I also earned my certification in Med-Surg. Nursing is what you make of it. If you hate what you do then your in the wrong speciality. There are so many different options. Don't like bedside? go into informatics, performance improvement, case management, legal nursing, forensics nursing, dialysis...the options are endless.

Hope you find your fit somewhere. You've worked hard to earn your degree.

Oh and for the nursing shortage...40-50% of the current workforce are boomers. They're due to retire...the shortage will be rolling in soon.

And for those nurses who come in "by boat" they don't just come in and take jobs...I work with many foreign nurses and they worked hard for what they have. I've met nurses who 20 years ago had to pay $4,000 just to make it half way across the world to come to the US, not have a place to stay or have a secure job only to work a retail job, petition to get a working VISA, pass NCLEX and get hired at a hospital willing to hire a foreign nurse. They don't just "take jobs."

It is a very competitive market today. Magnet hospitals only seeking BSN prepared RNs, many specialty areas only wanting to hire experienced RNs. The market has changed drastically.

Nursing needs more diversity. The nursing workforce is not reflective of the current population we treat.

I agree, nursing is not for you. I just finished nursing school, passed the NCLEX and got a good job 5 weeks later. The jobs are out there. I will begin in 3 more weeks - finally!! I cant wait to get started. I've been working in engineering for 20 years and I am completely unfulfilled. I can do the work but I need more than monetary satisfaction. I saw the "I'm in this for the money" types in school and they did not last - they could not do the work required to be a nurse, or did not want to. I cannot imagine a greater satisfaction than helping someone to heal, feel better, cope, etc. - whatever they need. I have few delusions about it; I realize that it will not be easy but it is something that I WANT to do and I have always wanted to do it. You must have the right mentality to be a nurse, the same way that you need to have the correct mentality to be an engineer, or a police officer, or a teacher. MEN dont go into nursing? It just sounds like you're frustrated and I can understand that - this is not turning out to be what you wanted. I'm sure you will find your calling eventually. I started this when I was 47. Good luck to you.

Thank goodness.

This thread in the beginning almost made me want to stop school. I am glad I kept reading.

When I first graduated in 2010 and could not find any jobs I was very bitter. I absolutely thought it was the worst decision I've ever made. It was unbelievable that I could not get any jobs. I have never seen such hostile and toxic environment such as nursing. Then I realize it wasn't nursing but every work place. Yes corporate business have ruined nursing. Slowly now I'm starting to work, here and there, as a per diem, home care, and SNF, real jobs, I'm not even expecting it. I actually like the places I work now. I'm debating weather I'd like to work in a hospital anyway. I was interested before but now I think it might not be a good idea. What I think is sad is to see people rushing to nursing school thinking their future is secure, burring themselves in debt, specially if you are older. Good luck...very good luck. I'm starting to like nursing again, but I came very close to just giving it all up. I'm glad I didn't but you might be in for some "real fun"

I really struggle with this post. Nursing is a vast field, perhaps one of the more opportunistic professions in terms of diversification. Healthcare in America has always been moved by financial motivations, and regulated by financial negotiations. This is nothing new. It sounds to me like A) you didn't do your homework and B) you were perhaps very picky as far as the field you wanted to work in. Many prospective nurses pick this profession believing that it will be rainbows and butterflies and they will hold the patients hand and love them back to health. It is very starry eyed, and I am not saying this was your case, but it is common. The truth is, this is a calculated profession where one must at times make split second decisions based on protocol, well being, and yes at times financial and legal risks. I am not trying to be rude or call you out, but I struggle with seeing a vague response that could put off a good prospective nurse. My advice is do your research. Talk to nurses that have been in the field a while and learn as much as you can. Job shadow, pursue a mentor, and for goodness sake read the job description.
