Nursing Students Male Students

Last week I helped a male nurse insert a Foley catheter and it felt inappropriate for a man to do it. It almost felt like rape. Am I justified for feeling this way?

Ok then, how would you feel if a MALE doctor did it? I bet you your perception of the situation would be different because they have DR before there name, what's the difference though, honestly ?
This man was a professional performing his job...
You regarding this procedure as almost rape is shocking. I believe you need to reflect on your own personal experiences that make you feel this way, talk to someone you trust / a facilitator perhaps..

This kind of accusation from a colleague is what scares me about becoming a nurse. As a gay man, I'm already nervous enough about having to do personal care on a female when I start my clinicals. I've never even considered that a patient or colleague might construe a male nurse performing a professional nursing skill as "Rape".
I start my LVN program in August, and now I'm officially a nervous wreck.

Don't be. As you can see by the responses in this thread no one agrees with the OP. You will see the same holds true when you get into NS and start doing clinicals. This is just one random person compared to the thousands and thousands who knew it is a medical necessity.

You'll be fine. In three quarters of clinicals, I have not seen any attitudes like the OP of this thread. When you get in lab, practice, practice, practice all of the procedures. Knowing the procedures very well will help keep your nervousness at bay when it comes time to care for a live patient(male or female). Concratulations on getting accepted and good luck!

That individual was trained and took an oath to provide sound medical care just like you did. If it isn't "rape" when a surgeon performs a TAH, it isn't "rape" when a male nurse inserts a Foley.

I find it very difficult to believe the OP is an RN at this point. I too am a bit offended at the reference of rape. It is amazing to me that this reference is made to a male nurse and foley catheter however, it is quite normal for a female to go to a male ob/gyn for an annual exam. Is that also comparable to rape? I do hope that the original poster is still in school and is able to learn about professionalism, it will certainly help in their career.

when it comes to health care i think you shouldn't look at the nurse as a man or a woman but as a nurse who is there to do what has to be done....same case with male and female doctor....inserting a cath is not a big deal as long as dignity is respect for the patient is shown..a female nurse should be present the same as when a doctor is to perform a pap-smear.

The dead horse continues to be beaten. :deadhorse
It may be time to close this stupid thread, as everything that could possibly be said has been. Foley = Rape? Seriously... What's next? Giving IV Antibiotics = Shooting up Heroin?

Thanks for the thread!
I agree that nothing more can be said about the topic, and we've probably exhausted all conversations related to it.
Let's close it down!
