In what order would you take these classes?

I'm still in my arts & sciences program, knocking off my non-nursing classes. I plan to talk with a councelor at my c.c, but in the meantime I'd like to have a second opinion from experienced students.

I have my communications/english classes done, but I need to take Pharmacology, micro-biology, anatomy & lab, physiology & lab, sociology, nutrition, medical term, and growth & development.

I plan to take one class per semester, in what order should I go?

So far I have gathered that med term, will help with anatomy, and anatomy will help with physiology, but what else goes with what?

if you can, try to take at least 2 classes per semester. because the science classes tend to correlate with each other and it gives you a better understanding of each subject. if you can't do that, get the sociology, nutrition and G&D classes out the way. they are fairly easy. then take A&P and then Micro. save pharm. for last because that is more of a nursing class and if you haven't took the sciences you won't understand a thing. the nursing school i went to wouldn't even allow you in pharm unless you had your sciences complete. i commend you for taking on this challenge with a family. i went to school with girls who also had kids and husbands and i take my hat off to them. just know you must be extremely organized and dedicated. nursing school doesn't leave much room for leisure activities, but the end result is worth it :)

I'd suggest micro and terminology before A&P. Sociology was fairly easy and could be taken along with A&P which will take ALOT of time.

in my program you wouldn't be allowed to take micro or nutrition until you've passed the anatomy and physicology...and pharmacology is a nursing class that only those actually IN the nursing program take..

my advice:

medical terminology (should help in all the other classes)

sociology

growth and development

A&P

nutrition

micro

pharmacology (check to see if your school has the same requirements as mine)

whatever you decide, try to keep the A&P and nutrition as close together as possible...there's a lot of "overlap" in those classes..

in my pharmacology class, we learn about drugs actions, etc that you NEED an A&P and micro background to understand..

I'd say:

Growth & development or sociology -same diff IMO

Nutrition

Microbiology

Medical term

Anatomy & lab

Physiology & lab

Pharmacology

I didn't have to take medical terminology, and pharmacology I'm in now (2nd semester nursing program). Physiology and pharmacology I'd definitely keep close to entering the program since you'll use the knowledge over and over. The rest of it I haven't really used directly, at least not anywhere NEAR as much as those. I would not want either one of them to be more than a semester or two apart from the nursing program (I have really bad retention... "use it or lose it").

I would agree with TrueSn. Pharmacology hits on micro, micro hits on A&P, even nutrition hits on A&P. Having taken these courses already, I really believe that knowledge of A&P was key to the others.

You may want to consider independent study for your soc, nutrition, and other non-science courses. I found them to be extremely easy and much shorter than a semester-long course. Of course, check with your school to see what they accept.

I agree about taking the bunny classes by independent study so you can do them when you feel like it concurrently, maybe even use them to break up study of the tougher stuff. Otherwise, you'll be years just getting through pre-reqs by taking them one at a time. Leave pharmacology for last, can't believe that's a pre-req for nursing, it should be within your nursing program, strange set up.

If you are only taking one class at a time, then I would get the sociology, nutrition and growth and development out of the way first since they are the least important classes and it's not as pertinent to remember the information from them.

I would take medical terminology first because it will help familiarize you with the rest of the classes, then anatomy to familiarize yourself with the body, physiology next while the anatomy is still fresh in your mind, then microbiology because the physiology and microbiology will help you with pharmacology.
