I am taking a five week speech class and I HATE IT! I just need to vent...speech is going to kill me this semster. ugh.

I found speech to be very challenging because of all of the required references etc. That was new to me and I hated it. BUT, I have learned that communication will make or break your career, regardless of how smart and/or intelligent you are. If you can't articulate your thoughts effectively, you will get nowhere.

Some of the most powerful people in the world that have shaped history, for better or worse, were able to do what they did because they knew how to speak to people, they were great orators. Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Lincoln, and so on.

Later in my career I found myself having to give speeches regularly and the basic skills I learned in speech gave me a place to start. As far as all of the references, if you give a speech you have to be able to back up what you are saying otherwise you destroy your credibility and many times your career goes with it.

Speech is important!!! So hang in there, this too shall pass.

I also have to take speech this semester. I actually enjoy it. I took a speech class in 9th grade, I think it really helped me out and make me more comfortable.

Good luck, your not alone!

Wow. I had to take it in high school, but not in college. eek. Good luck. It was a bit easier in high school considering I knew everyone in my graduating class of 54 girls. It must be so much harder as an adult!!

During your speech (in class) remember that everyone in the class has to speak. Anticipation is what makes me nervous so remember to BREATHE. If that doesn't work, picture them naked - just don't laugh out loud. LOL

My teachers were always telling us to slow down because we would get nervous and ramble. I wrote down pauses on my notecards to remind myself and then highlighted them. [PAUSE] Just don't read the word "pause" out loud!

I just have to ask-what does it mean when words appear between asterisks? I keep seeing them. Like *this*...?

Ya I started speech this semester too. I didn't think it was going to be a problem until it was my turn to speak. Suddenly I could feel my heart in my throught and my pulse was racing, forgot practically everything I planned to say. So I feel for you, going to be a long class. Also doens't help when some people just want to rattle on and on and on about some of the most boring things they can talk about.

Yucky. I had it in high school a million years ago, but not when I got my bachelors degree. Now that I'm in an ADN program, it's required to take "interpersonal communications". Yippie. Planning on taking that Winter quarter & getting it over with. NOT looking forward to it.

Speech is my least favorite class I ever took. I used to study for other classes during speech. Kept reminding myself that speech is a hoop to jump thru to get to nursing school.

Did not become a better public speaker, but I was exposed to powerpoint.

Hated, hated, hated speech. While I liked my classmates, I hated sitting thru their chosen topics... We could choose any topic at all. The students were mostly business majors. For some reason, some people chose insanely controversial topics. For example, one woman chose partial birth abortion. I had to sit thru 3 separate speeches with pictures for that one. Another tried to convince us that marijuana was cool.

What I learned from speech: Keep it lively & definitely keep it SHORT.

I hated speech but I did well though. Most ppl hate it, you're not an exception, try to rely on others in class who may be even more afraid than you.

I actually took speech online!

Helped allay alot of my fears about the class (we had to video our speeches and mail them in), plus the prof was very pleasant to work with..
