classes don't start for me until sept. 22 and i have speech first quarter to get it out of the way! thought about doing it online but figured if i was to scared to take the class it wasn't a good way to start my nursing adventure!! just hope i can handle it, would hare to have an anxiety attack or pass out an not be able to handle it!!

Hmmm, didn't mind it myself, except that I would have rather slept late (it was at 8am). Have a good outline and reheorifice well, then go first on speech day so you don't have time to sit and get more and more nervous.

I just have to ask-what does it mean when words appear between asterisks? I keep seeing them. Like *this*...?

If you mean that you keep seeing these online, it usually means that the person who wrote them is trying to emphasize a word without typing it in caps.

For instance:

I KNOW that what we do is important.

I *know* that what we do is important.

Basically the same thing. :) If you're in caps, it usually means that you're shouting or raising your voice to emphasize a point. The asterisks do the same thing, essentially, so that you can further communicate the point you're trying to make- online, we can't see your facial expressions or hand gestures or physical characteristics in any way, so people have to get creative when they type (another reason we have the smilies to utilize when we post). Is that what you were asking?

Like in the title of this post suggests, they can also signify that you're doing something- in this instance, the OP is moaning and wailing.

If I'm sad, I might say:

I'm SO sad! *sniffle*

...to imply an action that elaborates on what I've said.

If I'm angry, I might say:

That makes me so mad! *pulling hair out in clumps*

...to imply that I'm so angry it brings me to self-mutilation. ;)

In order for me to get my associates degree, it was required that we take Speech communication. Well, I pushed it off to the very last semester. Although speaking in front of people still isn't something I enjoy, it was the one class that I took that you really get close to your classmates. You will definitely find out that you are not ALONE at all. Plus with nursing, you are going to have to make presentations. This semester I am taking two classes in which a presentation is required. In microbiology we are having a Disease Symposium in which we need to present a case-study and in Nutrition we need to make a presentation on a vitamin or mineral. When I first heard this, I thought...no way! But then I realized that I'm beating a dead horse, I'm going to have to do it, especially if I want to maintain my GPA and get into the nursing program. I figure the best thing I can do for myself is to be super prepared, so that when the time comes, I'll have to be told to wrap it up.

Don't stress yourself. I've never heard of anyone dying from making a speech, plus again...YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!
