Skills Lab kit

My school requires us to buy skill lab kit. I am just wondering if anyone else has to buy this and what is included in it ?

Specializes in OB/GYN.

I had to pay over $100 for my lab kit. It included things we needed to practice putting on PPE, doing wound care, inserting a catheter, and a few other things here and there. It's for us to practice with. When we do our skills for our instructors to evaluate they provide us with everything we need. And yes, we did have to purchase our course manuals. Good luck!!

I attend a community college for the ADN program and have had to pay $237.85 for a skills bag that has Foley catheters, IV's, saline, gauze, etc. in it. I paid $535 for an ATI Test Kit, $23 for each pair of white pants, $20 for red scrub tops with the school name embroidered on them, and $30 for a white lab coat with a nursing student patch on it. All of this had to be purchased from the bookstore so shopping around was not an option.

I then spent lots of money on shoes, a stethoscope, B/P cuff, etc.

Tuition this semester was $1190 plus an additional $600 for books, and that was getting most of them off of ebay!

Although it is a huge amount of money, I cannot really complain because it will all be worth it in the end!!!

Wow, our skills bag was just under $100 but I bought mine from a former student for $40.

We were not allowed to buy 'used' on the skills bag or the ATI kit. I actually had an ATI kit given to me and was still told that this would not be acceptable to use!

Yes, my school made us buy that lab kit. It cost $125.00. All ot had in it was a few bandages, saline, i.v. start kits and stuff like that. We used 1 saline and 1 set of tubing out of the whole bag. We never used the other stuff. We were given everything we needed in the lab at school. When we questioned why we had to buy the kit, we were told that the school makes money on them.

Mine is now in my garage.

What is an ATI kit?

I don't know, but we were not allowed to buy useed either. We had to bring the reciept which was signed off by the teacher.

So, is your school anal retentive or what? They check the receipt? WOW. I could have assembled mine out of the hospital's garbage and the school would be none the wiser.

An ATI kit is primarily a bunch of books and DVD's from the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) that we have to review and then take a test over. This is supposed to ensure a higher passing rate for the NCLEX because the ATI is continually monitoring your progress every time a test is taken. If the ATI tests can not be passed, then chances of passing the NCLEX are not good.

Is ATI something to be done on your own time or is part of your course work? It sounds like you are supposed to the tests but do you review the material on your own or is it worked into the program? (Not in the program yet, so hope this doesn't sound stupid. Don't know if my school the other I'm applying to uses them. I know one uses Hesi tests throughout.)

Oh, the TEAS people.. will we ever get away from them?:uhoh3:

Major, by any chance are you going to Ivy tech? Because I noticed in the nursing pack there are $353 in ATI testing fees. I just wondering if that the same thing?

Anyways, schools will always try to nickle and dime you anyway they can. For an example, IUPUI charges its students $200 just for parking. I used to go there awhile ago. At Ivy they like to do this thing where they take standard text books, have them personalized to the school so then you can't buy them anywhere else.

And yes I did have to pay for a syllabus.

Okay, the pre-nursing student is sneaking out now before he get plumbed by stethoscopes. :)
