My school requires us to buy skill lab kit. I am just wondering if anyone else has to buy this and what is included in it ?

How much do they run?

Well... for the course packs.. I have one for each class... so I usually have 4 classes... each course pack is about 20-40 dollars (CAN). They are optional.. however all of the course goals are listed in them plus required pre readings including pages numbers, as well as articles and things that they put in them. I dont know how someone could survive without them lol. I usually put my notes that I have taken in class behind each corresponding section in the pack. And they also list the number of hours and the course outline etc. VERY HANDY. Out of all 48 in my class I dont think anyone has never bought one for each class. The only one I can say I have never used was for Pathophysiology and A&P. Other than that all my labs... all my fundamentals classes... ethics, research, partnerships, transitions.. everything, i have bought one for.

not as expensive as textbooks. The first day we bought a BOX of textbooks lol. And yes, I still use them to this day even in my 3rd year. my alltime favorite would be my Lewis, Surgical textbook. SO SO SOOOO helpful with case studies.

And... lab kits were around 48 dollars.. and you get 3 packages throughour the semester corresponding to upcoming labs.

I have 12 more weeks of surgical coming up in Jan :) Cannot waiittt

I'm getting ready to make my acquaintance with that textbook when it arrives on Thursday...

My school gives each student a lab kit at orientation/during the first week of class which consists of: a drawstring bag, a (cheap) stethoscope, a BP cuff, bandage scissors and a penlight. Anything and everything else is provided in lab when it's needed

Wow... lucky. We can buy scrubs from the school store too... cheaper to just go buy whatever you want. But we are only not allowed to wear all black... has to be black and a colour. and we have to wear the school crest which we have to buy (3$), and our name tags that are provided for us. I didnt bother buying a BP cuff... but I bought my own stethoscope, (Littmann Class II S.E), I love it. I do not know how people can survive without one :) However, in Labs, EVERYTHING is provided (usually), But yes we have to buy course packs.

I have looked over this site... how much do people generally pay per year?... I know it is less expensive where I am... I go to UFV which is based outside of Vancouver Canada, its about 7,000 a year (2 semesters)... and if you venture into UBC (Vancouver), its about 7-10,000. I think the program estimated about 30,000 in totally for 4 years or something like that. How much does everyone else fork out??

It is my FAVORITE. Not sure if you will have the Canadian edition like me... it is MASSIVE. like... HUGE. Maybe about... 3 inches thick? But it includes a disease or condition.. will tell you etiology, manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, pharmacology, and then nursing care including nursing diagnosis etc. GREAT textbook :)

I thought of buying it form some other store, where it would have cost less. In the end found out the only way I could get the school badge is to buy the uniform from their provided website. I checked the college book store, they don’t have the badge. The badge are must have on the uniform or I can’t access to the lab. L it sucks and no the uniform are not made of silk lol regular types you can buy like a set for $ 15.

Our scrubs are white top and specific color pants. Luckily, Cherokee makes that exact color. :yeah: We have to buy an arm patch from the bookstore, its about 5 bucks, I think. Our name tags are provided and all our pictures are horrible!:eek:

I also have the Littmann Classic II SE in raspberry. I already had a BP cuff but we weren't required to get one.

I'm in an ADN program and I pay around $1600 in tuition a year.

That sucks. Luckily, our bookstore has the arm patches separate so we can get our uniforms somewhere else but still get the patch. It's ridiculous how students are ripped off. The scrubs that my bookstore sells are around $20 each piece and they are the worst quality I've ever seen.

1600 for tuition a year!? Thats a STEAL!!! Wow... I dont know if that differs over ADN programs and BSN programs. We dont have ADN programs here... You are either an LPN.. or an RN-BSN.. and we have very few NP's... mostly up north.

My school is approximately $12,000/year...

We also had to buy specific uniforms from this one shop though...and our patches came with it.

Yeah, I didn't realize how cheap it really is until I started visiting Allnurses. My tuition is (right now) $763 a semester. I also have a BS degree. If I had returned to that university, my tuition would have been about $5000 a year.

Hmm, i guess it is all different based on different schools. I am kind of glad I can wear whatever scrubs I want, as long as they are appropriate. My brother bought me a really nice new pair of Grey's Anatomy scrubs for Christmas (sooo soft). I love them but i would never buy myself a pair because they run about 45$ (CAN), as long as a i wear the UFV crest, and my name tag, they are fine.

As for course packs, they SHOULD be provided.. for the amount of money I pay, makes me wonder where it all goes... perhaps the new dummys the school bought.. that we hardly use because we are third year and spend 4 days a week in clinical?...

Yes, it was mandatory for us to purchase one. We used them in fundamentals for skills such as vitals, IV therapy, injections, wound care, foley cath.,trach care, and sterile fields. All the supplies for those skills were in the bag along with scissors, Bp cuff etc. I think it is well work the pric eb/c you pratice your skills @ home. The only item that wasn't in the kit was a stethoscope you purchase one for a reasonable price.
