Thoughts....could you or would you want to leave the bedside to work at home?

I couldn't ever leave bedside nursing, as physically helping people in their health and illness are the reasons why I decided to become a nurse in the first place. And, practically speaking, leaving bedside nursing absolutely diminishes your clinical skills and critical thinking (just this writer's opinion) and any loss of those skills can be detrimental to your career.

I have worked out of my house for several jobs, and now I work for myself. And I absolutely love it. When I was a new grad, and for my first years as a nurse, I didn't envision anything outside of hospitals. Even when I got my MN I saw it as a way to expand my hospital-based practice, and that's what I did for six years. After that, well, things can change in ways you never expect, and thank goodness I had a good education upon which to rely. Don't count on being bedside forever-- you never know what can happen!

After 25 years at the bedside.. with ever increasing and unmanageable responsibilities..

Yes , working from home in my jammies..... is priceless.

I took a second work-from-home-as-a-nurse job and absolutely HATED it! I hated the isolation. I actually hated the flexibility because I would procrastinate all week, and it would be Friday and I still needed to get 10 more hours of work in before Sunday.

I lasted six months, and then picked up a different second job. Much happier!

NOOOO. Nein. Anya. Non. Nyet. Bu xiang. I did work as a telephonic nurse for a while years ago, although in an office. I HATED it. I love bedside! I wanted to be a CRNA for quite a long time, but have decided against it in part b/c I love being an ICU nurse! I work half-time and otherwise am home w/ 5 kids, and like a PP like getting out.

Besides, if I were at home during work hours I'd get too distracted by AN. ;)

Although I'll add, the mom of my 11 y/o daughter's friend is an RN for an insurance co. and works from home. She wanted to be a SAHM...although for the life of me, I can't imagine how to get any work done w/ little kids running around. I would need daycare I think! But it works for her, and she loves it.

I go to work to meet people I wouldn't meet otherwise, challenge my brain, get a good workout, and feel good. I used to have depression and I was a stay at home mom. I loved being a stay at home mom but it was isolating in the community where I live. I also think human beings need to be active and be around other people to be emotionally healthy.

Yes I'd work from home. Without one single second thought.

This reminded me of when Matt Lauer said nurses look like they come to work in their pajamas.

But no, I could never work at home. I'd end up just binge eating watching TV all day. I know some nurses who do it and love it though.

Binge eating and watching TV is NOT an option... you are working. Even though the SETTING is my home, I work nonstop, it's busy and can be quite stressful.

No way! I'm very happy at the bedside!

Nope, love the bedside!

My critical thinking skills are peachy keen fine. The level of case management has taken them to a level that is far beyond the bedside.
