Nurses General Nursing

Why does it suck to be an RN these days, it is everywhere, in every area, I am so tired of being treated like dirt! We nurses do most of the work and the docs and big hospital systems treat us like peons. When did we lose the professionalism? WHen did being an RN become a negative profession? Where did all the jobs go?

This is the hardest job I have ever had. That said, I love it, but hospital nursing is emphatically not for me. That, I hated.

15 years is a long time to be doing something you hate. Time to consider other options maybe? Different area, leave nursing, etc?

The changes, in my opinion, started happening when non-medical people started being placed in leadership roles that oversee the nursing/medical part of the hospitals and when the shift went from 8 to 12 hrs and the electronic med rec. The financial situation in the country now doesn't help...many nurses are staying in positions longer, positions nurses use to be hired into are now being filled by MA's..there is a lot of reasons...mostly though, it seems financial.
There are some great hospitals that do treat nurses well. I am soon to return to the hospital setting but I would not unless I absolutely had to, work FT in a floor nurse capacity. PRN or PT I can do w/o problem but I understand why there are so many on here complaining about their jobs.

Move then. I hated my job, moved hospitals and specialties and now I love what I do.

I haven't been a nurse that long (two years) but I don't think parts of it ever stopped "sucking" primarily staffing; I just began to develop a love/hate relationship with it.

What job do people not hate to some degree? Every profession has its downsides. I don't think I've ever met a person that didn't have something bad to say about their job. Maybe a professional athlete, movie actor, or model love their jobs but again..

Been doing this almost 7 years. I get frustrated, tired, aggravated, etc, etc, ad nauseum. bottom line, though? I love what I do and at the end of the day I leave my job knowing I have done my best, I have made a small difference in my corner of the world. I don't do it for recognition or respect or money or even for the occasional thanks. I do it because it is what I feel needs doing and I am relatively good at it.
I have been blessed to be surrounded by excellent mentors and colleagues and almost always been able to find at least one trait worth liking in my patients. Every job has negatives as well as positives. The deciding factor is one's own attitude.
The day I begin hating what I do, I will walk away. I strongly suggest you do the same. This job is only worth doing as long as you love doing it.

I used to hate nursing. I worked long-term-care for years as an LPN then I went back and got my RN thiinking that once I started working in a hospital I would like nursing better. (LPNs don't really work in hospitals too much in my area). I worked ICU step-down and found I didn't like nursing any better as an RN.
I left the hospital and got a job as a nurse at a special needs school and couldn't be happier. I work Mon-Fri 8:30 to 4, no weekends no holidays. I have a completely different role than when I was in the hospital and nursing homes. I've even decided to go back to school. I can't believe the differnce. I make about $10 less an hour that I was making, but the convenient hours and love of the job are worth it to me.
That's the beauty of being a nurse. If you're in an area you don't like, go work somewhere else. You can do almost anything in nursing!

Being a nurse provider is not the problem, having to deal with arrogant physicians and management is the issue. I advise you look into other organizations or make life decisions that better suit your needs.

Agree Agree yada yada yada, then I get a hug from a patient, a family member. Tonight a family member gave me a running hug.
Thats what it is about for me.....
That makes all the negatives worth it.......
