Anyone ever have just one of those nights?.....Get on the floor...I'm at 12 patients(i'm a tech, btw).....4 knees, a hip, a VIP, some other family complaint person, somebody else who wanted medicine NOW(I can't make the nurse come any faster sir), Family on someone who's leaving who "watches" me get her dressed to make sure I'm doing it right, get a new admit who tries to climb out of bed with a back fx beacuse "I gotta pee..." (pan or bottle sir, no other choices)....who then proceeds to whip said urinal at my head when I tell him this.......finally goes to sleep at 4AM, arrived at 9PM....and I'm trying to take care of everyone else...have to move a pt so the family could stay...(was a good thing, but stilll).......

ARGGHHH...sometimes I feel like the "Best" care I can give isn't the "best" care I COULD give(if we were adequately staffed, and my patient load was realitively based on acuity..(which we supposedly are now....for nurses, not techs...techs are now wayyyyy more overworked then we used to be, and my nurses help, but they aren't there to be techs...they're there to be nurses.....)

OK, I'm done now...off to sleep and back for 1/2 a shift tonight(what was I thinking......) Thanks all.

PS 4 more months til gradutation, 4 more months til graduation.....AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!:bugeyes::bugeyes::bugeyes:

Been there, done that! When I was a CNA in nursing school, I couldn't wait!! No more "helpful' family members watching every move I made to offer suggestions "you might want to get her a tissue. Her nose might run...". Or "we know you are 'just an aide and can't bring the pain pill, but I will harrass you about it again every 35 seconds until the nurse comes."

Unfortunately, "those helpful family members'' are still there after 16 years of working as an RN and they still worry the ______ out of me!

Good luck! Anne, RNC

[bANANA]yeah that[/bANANA]

Your story reminded me of last weekend: we rec'd a elderly male towards the end of my shift. ER said he was combative. Yeah, that's a bit of an understatement. He arrived and it took SIX nurses and aides to keep him in bed. Finally stood him up to put him in a g-chair where we could at least put a tray on. As he stood up, which he ambulated fine (just very combative) he whipped it out and urinated on my foot. I didn't care because I was seriously worried about this man. His wife who was present said he was at church that am and just went nuts. She's apologizing for his behavior, he's calling her names, and he pushed me hard enough I landed on the floor.

In his urine.

Only 2 aides and 3 nurses for 18 pts (no charge nurse). One aide and one nurse had to stay with him so I was stuck working the floor. I had to pass supper trays, toilet pts, change incontinent pts, somehow feed 3 pt's on opposite ends of the hall, turn those who couldn't do it themselves, etc. Thank God above that our nursing supervisor is awesome and she helped me pass trays and feed. She then asked me if I would be willing to work 16 hours instead of my usual 12. I thanked her profusely for her help and then laughed. Oh, and our wonderful nurse manager (who NEVER works weekends) left me a long list of things to clean and stock. I was stupid enough to mention how much I love to organize.

But I don't think my day can compare to yours. Here's to hoping next time it's better  Best of luck on your NCLEX future RN!!

ok, update to the next night, yall.....So, I arrive to 9 patients....nobody tooooooo bad, right? Well, let's see, I picked up 1/2 shift...in those 6 hours:

-received my back guy from sx who had a temp of 92.7...so bear hugged and finally got up to about 97.7......then, he started getting out of bed again to pee...which he couldn't do......then trying to pull his weiner out of the depends.....back come the poseys.....well, he ain't gonna die on my shift....(the day nurse said that as she left.....thanks for the positivity)....in my heart of hearts, I'm glad the old guy's doing well....it just wasn't the kind of night where I could really help him out much.

- had a 45 yo guy, who hadn't poop in 3 days...finally POOP! Yay!!!! Of course, after he was back in bed, he tried to tell me he couldn't tear the salt and pepper packets to season his dinner...."Look, buddy, you're a big boy now, you don't need me to season your food for you....(plus, I've got 2 admits coming, 2 feeders, 4 incontinent people etc......I don't have that kind of time tonight...)

- had family stay on a patient with a roommate and they have 3 of em in there....felt bad for the other guy......

- another admit who had to have strained urine for stones....tg he had a foley.

as I was leaving, confused old guy with influenza, pos pressure room.....wheeeeeeee.

I can't wait to do it all tomorrow....but I approach it knowing that all us techs that do it are "rock stars" baby!!!!

Thanks all for listening.....at 13 a piece, hopefully tomorrow is a little calmer....
