VCR/DVR Alert - Vietnam Nurses with Dana Delany

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I saw a snippet in Entertainment Weekly which gives the doc a good review and states: "Look, you're just going to cry........"

What I like is that it not only is going to tell their story at the time, but the postwar decades of how they coped.

Dana Delany, for those who don't know, is an actress that played a Vietnam nurse in the 90s show "China Beach". It stands as one of the most nurse-positive shows ever aired. Dana Delany states: "I applaud WE TV for giving them (the nurses) the opportunity to share their emotional stories that give a uniquely female view of the Vietnam War." People in charge of the Iraq War should watch the WE documentary to learn how not to conduct an armed conflict. There are lessons to be learned by listening to the brave women who served their country when they often were the last friendly contacts with soldiers who lost their lives in Vietnam."

Two threads merged.

They had an address to order the dvd, http://www.vietnamnursesdvd.com, the site also shows the nurses memorial in D.C.

I remember before I started my nursing program, visiting that department at my university, I saw one of the instructors and knew, without any doubt, that she was an Army nurse, and Vietnam vet. She was my med/surg instructor.

I will never forget her.

I loved China Beach. I also read, " The Morning After". I plan on ordering this DVD.

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

Watched this last night, then followed it with the China Beach that had the nurses commentary on it. Two hours of tear jerking, made me proud to be a nurse, TV.

I will never know what they went through, but in the future when I see silly promo's about nurses being "angels" I will think of these nurses and realize it isn't that far from the truth. Although hopefully in time we will all be seen more as the skilled, educated professional we are.

I've never seen China Beach before and probably won't start watching it now, but what a great show. I'll bet it had some influence on girls becoming nurses.

it was very moving. while speaking of their struggles to get recognition and a memorial, one of the nurses said "if it wasn't for us, the wall would be much higher and much wider". i thought that summed up their contributions in vietnam so promptly. in another scene, another nurse told of meeting a woman in dc who was looking for possibly the last person who had touched her son before he died in vietnam.

I watched this show twice. Last night, and today after work. I'll be the first to say that it makes all of my minor "bitches" about bad days at work look like a day at Disney! I can't imagine being 20 years old and facing the things that those brave women faced, and I'm a 40 year old guy that thought he had seen it all. I had a few tears in my eyes by the end, and recomend that anyone that missed this fantastically poignant show catch it next time it airs!

Just watched the show earlier this evening ... I was moved to tears.

I agree w/JohnBearPA's post above -- it makes our typical daily headaches & frustrations look minor by comparison. I've seen a lot of traumatic injury, human drama and pain in a year in a Level I ER, but nothing that would even begin to compare.

All nurses have my respect, but let me just take a minute to give my humble thanks to those who have served on active military duty.

I've been working 12-hour shifts weekened, but plan to watch it tomorrow night. Thanks for the reviews. I'm looking forward to it.
