Son In Hospital

Hi everyone, My 15 yr old son is in the hospital. He has been epiliptic since birth. His seizures have never really been well controlled. Until Sunday a.m. he has not had a problem with status epilipticus for several yrs. When I got home from work Easter morning I found him in bad shape. Hubby said he had gotten him up with a hard seizure about an hour earlier but then seemed to be in his usual post ectal state. When I found him his AP was 150 and resps were 60 and very shallow, T 99.0 axillary. He was very cyanotic I listened to his chest with my steth and could here very loud moist gurgling in his left lobe. We called 911. By the time we reached our local ER they had to intebate him. They flew him by life flight to a bigger hosp. He came off the respirator this a.m. He is much improved but I am still worried. He is very confused and cannot seem to understand us or the staff. He speaks but not in complete sentences like he used to. When he does speak the words do not form a sentence so we cant understand him either. He gets very frustrated and extremely SOB. His resps are very erratic between 22 rarely to 44 fairly often. He is on O2 at 4ltr per nc. Whenever they try to turn it down his oO2 sat drop and they bump it back up. I am scared. Anyone have any thoughts. Oh yea very important detail. He did aspirate during one of the many seizures before arriving in Toledo. They did a procedure where they went down with a scope and tried to basically clean out the lungs. Left lobe atelectisis(sp) OK I think that is it, sorry this was such a long post.

I hope he is improving. Please let us know!

My heart goes out to you, angelbear. It's hard enough watching someone else's child go through a seizure, I can't imagine watchign my own.

Only time will tell, there is no answer other than what the docs can give you.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your son.

I'm hoping by now your son is improving. My prayers for your family. Keep us informed when you can.

Angelbear...

I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I can only imagine how concerned you are.

My best friend (an RN) has a daughter who has had epilepsy ever since she was a child.. she is now in her twenties and is a schoolteacher.. she recently went to Africa as an "exchange teacher" and in June will be going to Taiwan to teach firstgraders for a year. She's really something.. lives by herself.. drives.. and her mom (my friend Jayne) is always soooooo concerned for her.

I'm sure Jayne would have some valuable info or at least insight for you, as she has dealt with this for so many years with her own daughter. Would you mind if I email her this page and have her contact you? Thought I'd ask first.

Hoping for the very best for your son.. and you ! :kiss

Hugs to you and your family!!!

My thoughts are with your son.

Sorry to hear about your son. Thoughts and prayers to you both.

You are all in my prayers ...

Take care of yourself, too!

Thank you all so very much for your warm thoughts and prayers. He is doing well tonight. He is more vocal and more alert. Nuero. talked with us. He said that he feels that our son is one of the few seizure pts who the more seizures he has the worse they will get. He also says that there is nothing we can do to prevent him from aspirating again or having a fatal injury from a seizure. He encouraged us to chose to let him have a good quality of life. He also encouraged us that research is being done aggressively even more now so than just a couple of yrs ago. Our son has been on most all the meds and does have the VNS. The meds have not ever done much for him but the VNS has taken him from 45 grand mal seizures per month to 15 to 20 per month. Funny thing is I know all this and we did decide a few yrs ago to try to let him have the best quality of life possible. In the past few months his seizures have gotten worse again but until Sunday I never really felt he might die from this. He has been intubated and air lifted before but this time just felt different. Anyway he is doing better now. Yes he did have a CT scan no MRI due to the VNS he also had an EKG and EEG as well as a consult with a pulminologist today. The dr says they will gather all the info and then talk to us. I love his nuero he is a wonderful and compassionate man. He has recieved excellent care all the way around. Geez I can be long winded. Please know how much I appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.

Also Jnette I would love to hear from your friend.
