So two weeks ago a mean older man (I am talking MEAN, old miner and trained mules, and has the mouth of a mad salior as my mother would say!) called me into his room on our dependant side of the facility to tell me his wife was dying! Me and a caregiver rushed in to find her barely breathing, blue, and faint pulse. He ran to her and re-started CPR on her till we convienced him we could do it (he was doing an awesome job!)...but sadly...she was gone.

I spent an hour with him as the anger phase took him over and let him scream and yell as much as he wanted...just listening to him. All the sudden my 'country' side took over and we started sharing stories and well...using certain terms ;) I don't normally utter...and I calmed him down enough to accept that he must say goodbye to his wife. He was terrified and I walked him in to the bed the paramedics put her on for the funeral home to retrieve, and told him..."its time...talk to her about all you loved about her, what you will miss, and give her love so she will always have it :). He excused me, and spent 2 hours talking and laying by her side...

I didn't see him after that till just this afternoon! Guess he was looking for me (and being rather rude about it..LOL! Calling people who didn't know who I was so many names! OH MY! LOL!).

Well I saw him as I left work and went to him and said hello and asked how he was doing. Tears came to his eyes as he told me how long he had looked for me because he needed to tell me thank you (he doesn't thank or say nice things about anyone!!!). He hugged me and complimented me so much..and I returned the compliments too...reminding him that thanks to his CPR efforts..things were so much better! I really validated his involvement, and it seemed like the one piece of things he needed to move on!

Then I felt it! The utter respect and gratitude of someone looking towards me as a real medic, the one you turn to when things are at their darkest, and I was worthy of the job!

Despite peoples dispositions or characters, we are looked up to with much respect...once in a while we get lucky and hear it..or see it...but never forget it is there! Don't deny people that wonderful power we medics represent..keep it going! It only takes one real thank you to fill your heart for a lifetime!

Anyone else with an uplifting thank you story you have had...I LOVE THOSE..they cheer me up!

It is sooooooooooooo wonderful when we can "connect" to the unconnectable! Thanks for the uplifting story. Yet another example that what we do is very important and that we DO and CAN make a difference in a person's life!!

What a great story. Makes me want to study even harder. Nice to hear something so positive.
